I have been in the Nutrition Business for over five years and have been an avid fitness buff for over 15 years. It’s all about change and educating yourself about food, exercise, and how the body responses when you eat and exercise. That’s why they call it EXERCISE SCIENCE. You will never get a full grasp of weight-loss without understanding these things and their relationship to both.

Also it is about change and over-coming bad habits. Start slow but be consistent. I always love to ask people who ask about weight-loss and mention that they miss their gym workout that day and felt the rest of the day was shot; I ask them if they have a dog. They look at me???? And say yea, why. Well after dinner did you take him for a walk, you know a mile walking the dog would have burned a few calories, and by the way the dog woild have love it too. They always look at me and usually have nothing to say. You got to love it. Change is not easy it’s difficult, but you need to make it happen every day.

We all fall off the wagon and sometimes it’s not our fault. Let me share short story. In Aug of this year I had emergency surgery to remove sists from my spine.First time in the hospital overnight in 52 years, all my friends and family could not believe it happened, fine on Friday emergency surgery on Monday, 10 days in ICU, 69 days at home 7hr IV daily. I lost weight 35lbs and it wasn’t all fat. Not from a guy 52 and able to bench 225lbs. multiply times to only being able to bench my baby granddaughter 22lbs. 10 times. But you know where I’m going tomorrow for the first time in four months. The GYM.

Here are two tips to help you lose weight. And it has nothing to do with taking vitamins or supplements, although I do believe in both. These two things not only work but help you stay the course.
1. The eating chair. It has to be in the kitchen and you can only eat when you sit in that chair. No snacking in other rooms in the house or in front of the TV. You’ll be surprised but your food choices you make while sitting in the eating chair will better.
2. Every time you don’t exercise, no matter what type of exercise you do. When you don’t do it. Write down in a journal what took presidencies over missing your exercise time and at the end of the week review what you wrote. Not only will you think is was a total waste of time, but you be more apt to stick with your workout schedule knowing how you felt when you review your journal.
I hope I didn’t ramble on to much and the things that I mentions above are useful and helpful to those who struggle with weight-loss.

One other thought crossed my mind on unsuccessful attempts at weight loss. I see people eating a large amount of foods in one sitting. The saying goes, 'you eat until you get full.' You get used to eating a lot of food in one sitting. You will eventually eat more and more. That's why seconds and take home a plate terms were invented.
People say they want to lose weight, but I think they really don't know how. Adding a diet soda really doesn't help much in the battle of the bulge.
I am meeting people who sit down on their jobs. At lunch time, they eat and pack it in. Nothing is moving through their system. Then they have to sit back down on the job to do the work. An endless cycle of eating and sitting all day. Unsuccessful attempts of losing weight over the weekend really does not help either.
There is no motivation to change this lifestyle. They have become creatures of habits. From there, all attempts of losing weight will be unsuccessful without some help from someone who cares about their health and show them to change their habits. That would be the hardest thing to do to change your habits to live a happier and healthier life.

A guy at my church who had lost 30 lbs over a few months told me the secret:

1. Eat Less
2. Move More

What I started doing is I take a break from behind the computer every 45 minutes and walk for 10. Five minutes to rest, drink, etc. Back to work

I fill my plate like I "normally" would without thinking. Then I thoughtfully put HALF BACK.

So far... < 20 lbs in three months.

It is not the best advice, people with anorexia follow that.

It is not eating less, it is has to be with food selection, supplementation, right state of mind and the right exercise.

Hi Mike,

I think the majority of people overweight lack self discipline. It really comes down to choice. Do you want to place your health as a priority?

Fad diets rarely work because they don’t address the choice factor. The choice to eat right and exercise as a part of your life’s routine not just for the next 90 days. Those that do lose weight on these diets tend to go back to their previous routine after they lose the weight.

It’s all about choice. Eating right and exercising. Replacing junk food with real whole foods and just a small amount of exercise. 30 minutes 4 times a week with a little better diet would do wonders.

Just a humble opinion on a very big problem here in the US.
