I have to tell you that I am not speaking as a marketer. I do not know the first thing about marketing (which is what I'm here to learn).

I agree with you whole-heartedly!

I am not motivated in the slightest to buy something from somebody (or even investigate their possibilities) if they've done little more than add me to their list of 'leads.'

I feel like most people who have requested my 'friendship' on FB spent absolutely no time getting to know me before they started telling me why I needed their stuff.

Cheers to you for bringing it up! Somebody with that sort of insight is the type of person from whom I'd like to learn.

There are no rules set in stone as far as how you can socialize on Facebook (if you're being ethical about it and non being a spammer).

As far as how you can promote your business...think about this - when you go to a social gathering, how much of your conversation is based on you pushing your business onto other people?

About using other peoples wall, it really bothers me when I see others tag high traffic profiles where the tagged has no direct connection with the link/content. That's low grade marketing IMHO. Commenting on other peoples status updates is cool, as long as it's relevant.

Welcome to BN, Charles. I like your comment: "Commenting on other peoples status updates is cool, as long as it's relevant." I believe you just summarized "relationship marketing" with those few words.

Mike, I agree with your comment as well. "I am not motivated in the slightest to buy something from somebody (or even investigate their possibilities) if they've done little more than add me to their list of 'leads.'" I agree with you wholeheartedly. Nobody is ever going to care what business you are involved in, if you do not care about them as an individual and their needs FIRST. If you want to know the first rule of marketing, I think you just proved that you already know it with that comment.

Charles, I also enjoy it when someone comments on my updates and offers advice as long as it is "relevant." If more people were to put that one concept into practice, I honestly believe there would be more success stories in our business. Thanks to both of you.
