Hey Vernial,
It's a good question. NLP is a pretty broad term, but in essence it's about using Language to reprogram the brain (yours or other people's) to achieve desired results.
There's two major sides to it:
1. Some great tools for re-programming your own mind, which is powerful if you're looking to install new beliefs, mindset and so forth. It can be very, very powerful but tends to work best if someone is using NLP techniques to help you. A closely related field is Neuro Associative Conditioning (named by Tony Robbins) which is similar in intention, though has a slightly different slant approach wise.
2. Some tools which come under the NLP umbrella are more geared towards communicating with others. These are largely the ones taught in the context of sales and business. Ranging form simple rapport building to virtual hypnosis, implemented knowledge of NLP can certainly help to increase communication and persuasion skills.
Many successful MLMers (and others) are using some NLP, sometimes simply under the guise of good communication, not as NLP. Studying it will undoubtedly help you improve your ability to use language, internally and externally, to achieve what you want.
There can be some moral 'grey areas' with NLP use since the ability to manipulate others to your own will with words alone needs to be tempered with a high degree of maturity and responsibility to avoid leaving a nasty mess behind you...
A couple of recommended sources:
Tony Robbins has some nice, accessible (and powerful) self-help stuff. I still like the older books by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who are credited with developing the field based on the hypnosis techniques of Milton Erickson..
Hope that helps mate,
Good luck!
