I think that Twitter does limit the number you can send per day - Would love to know how many that is?

OR

If you have auto DMs blocked, you wont get it!

I know I do : )

Yah, I know - I send em, but wont receive em!

Here is an example of what I send out to all my new followers and it has been incredibly successful :

Example of proper Auto DM - Hi thanks for the follow! Give me a second to say hi in person via video! I promise it's not spam!-http://tiny.cc/IyRtG

I'm letting them know that I am getting lots of followers, so I'm using an auto dm. I ask them to say hello so that I can actually HEAR them! Finally, the link goes to a welcome video ~ something I learned from the stars! Not selling them anything- just letting them know who I am.

Hi Nate, Hi Melanie,

while both of your DMs may not be a spam, unfortunately I will not read it. My eyes will just fly over it as it contains a link.

I saw only a handful of DMs I actually responded to. All of them had no links and were very personal. My favourite was something like this (from a person with tens of thousands followers AND following):

Code: Select all
Hi, lets be honest, this is automated message. However I wanted to say that I appreciate your follow and I will follow back. Send @ at any time to start real chat.

This is not actual message I received but it's close enough (writing from memory). It has all parts of the good add: sincerity, immediate gain (follow back) and offered bonus (lets start chat with 'high flyer').

And yes, I responded and we had conversation.

I don't use DMs (as yet), but than I have just over 4000 connections. May be I will use them at some point (never say never, right?). If yes,it will be something like the DM described above.
Have a good day.

They tend to be very ineffective because they are so often used for sending out links and spam that most people don't even check out their dms. If you do send one out be sure to make it personal and do not include a link to some opportunity or to your blog.

They are very personal if you use them correctly-send something that begs a response, something that will make the users tweet back to you.

Here is a sample of what I send out to my new followers and I have had some excellent responses to it.

Hi thanks for the follow! Give me a second to say hi in person via video! I promise it's not spam!-http://tiny.cc/IyRtG

Hey Nate

Love your method using the video.

I don't use the DM but I will look into it now. (Especially using video) Great Move...Bro!!

Also nate i could understand not promoting your product or opportunity in a DM

but you mention don't even add your blog. For me I would think a blog would be fine

because it allows the follower to know more about you.

But thats just my opinion.

Let me know what you think

Thats a very good DM to model....Very Good

It looks like a message that Perry Bel, Mike D, or Frank Kern

would come up with.

Thanks for posting it.

melaniemilletics wrote:I have to agree with you Nate,

I absolutely do use an autoDM. I learned to do so from social media experts. I choose to follow in the footsteps of the mega successful, not to listen to the grumblers.

Obviously an auto dm is not meant for spamming. Unfortunately, many are actually being taught to do exactly this. In fact, there are affiliate products that are being sold right now that teach you how to make money on twitter - but using an auto dm to sell their stuff.

An auto dm that sells your stuff, or anything else is just ugly. I think it was Mike who made the analogy of being the jerk at the party- that's exactly what its like. Meet me, interact with me. If I like you, I will ask what you do - by visiting the link in your profile!

The auto DM I send is this:

Moving Fast here + only getting more interesting! Send an @reply so I know UR here! http://budurl.com/hellotwit

I'm letting them know that I am getting lots of followers, so I'm using an auto dm. I ask them to say hello so that I can actually HEAR them! Finally, the link goes to a welcome video ~ something I learned from the stars! Not selling them anything- just letting them know who I am.

Its about time I updated that video too- but hey, its workin!

Sorry for posting 3 consecutive times

but had to let Mel know that I really liked here

DM (Direct Message ). You have a very good Welcome

Message. I see video is the way to go. I was going

to use a simple "thank you for following me message"

but Nate and Mel influenced me to go with video.

thanks guys

I do include my blog, if you mean including it as my website link on my profile. But what I don't do is send an auto message containing a link to my blog, that's all I meant. And thanks for the kind words! :)

No, I do not send out a automatic DM. It doesn't seem genuine. I try to send little messages from the heart such as "nice to meet you" "I hope your day is going good". I might check the profile and see if we have anything in common. I might compliment them on their site. I usually don't offer free stuff because most people know it is pretext that leads to a biz pitch of some kind.
