Allen,
Posting ads does work. It has in the past and it will continue to work in the future. One thing to remember though is your company (and no offense here as nearly all companies employ this) is using an old approach to building your business. Posting ads is a lot like opting in to list builders and buying leads - they can show results but there are better ways to use your time online.
The new approach to marketing is all about creating an atmosphere around yourself that is connected with as many like minded individuals as possible. It's called Attraction Marketing and Betternetworker is an awesome place to start.
Next, after you've begun employing new marketing tactics into your everyday life you need to begin focusing on niche markets and exploiting these markets but that's a whole other post. My point being, yes posting ads will get you results-but if you're looking for a more efficient approach to building your business other than the one most companies suggest, start with Magnetic Sponsoring.
Hope this helps

Re: Does Posting Ads Really Work?
Good ? nice feedback.....I personally would not waste my money, as I believe they are ineffective in securing solid leads. You might get a person or two that's interested in your offer but getting that person to commit to your proposal is another matter all together. Generally if they are looking through free classifieds to begin with they probably do not have a lot of money. So for them to get going with whatever you are presenting and it cost some cash it might be a bit of a problem.

"No MLM" and "No Business Opportunities"
This just means don't post ads to your bizop directly. This shouldn't be a problem if you are using attraction marketing to generate you biz-op leads. There are a ton of ways to get people to see your opportunity without directly pitching it.
The "trick" is getting them to look at something that they can use to help them with their own biz-op. Get them to optin to your follow-up system before you ever show them a biz-op. Craigslist and the like can't put terms and conditions on your follow-up
Classifieds do work, but like Alex said it's nt the most targeted traffic in the world.
Pay Per Click is definitely a surefire way to target the a responsive market. That way you have a better shot of tailoring your ads to the very people who will see them. With classifieds, a ton of people will see your headline, few will click to read your ad, fewer will follow the link to your site and a tiny percentage will actually take your desired action once they get there.
But yes, they do work. It just takes some dedication. Once you lock in a schedule and system for posting, I'd recommend outsourcing it. While classifieds do work, you'll way to weigh the return on your investment of time.

Thanks for the great information. Does anyone post more than one per day to these sites? I'm trying to find the right mix without getting banned.

Yes, Posting ads still work. Have good ad copy! I do agree it's not really targeted traffic to networkers, but there are still millions of people looking for an opportunity and they have no idea network marketing even exists. I didn't. I get LOTS of responses from Backpage ads that I pay to have ran in the the BIZ OPP sections of the locals newspapers for cheap. Backpage Love.

People that go to these sites are looking for something so yes it is targeted. The ad will work if you have a title that draws attention and then the body of the ad makes them want to click on the link or contact you. You have to keep their attention throughout the whole ad. Before you spend a lot of time writing the ad read through some ads and take note of the ones you would click on and those you pass up.

Personally...
..to me they are like splash pages and just like a a splash page you need a
good headline..
I often looked at classifieds to get me a good headline especially those that
cost to much per word..those are the ones where you find some good
headlines..I mean they gotta come up with a catchy 10 word ad plus..
Classified ads to me beats a display ad anytime..for some reason people
love to read classified ads..wonder why?..
If we charge 3 dollars or even 5 dollars for an info pack you get your target
leads..that's offline though..
