Some Marketers STILL Don't Get It!

Postby Ken McDougal on Fri Apr 08, 2011 7:19 pm

You would think that will all the excellent marketing training that is available on the internet today, that this would not happen. I can't believe that there are STILL some marketers out there that STILL don't get it. They think that because you "opt in" to their website, they now have your full permission to HAMMER you with their emails. Case in point...

I just opted into this guy's site this morning because he was offering a free software tool that I found interesting. I know that by opting in that I would start receiving occasional communications from him. That was only 12 hours ago...not even one full day. I have already received 4 emails from him (in only 12 hours), trying to "convince me" to JOIN his Main Business and how GREAT is was and how much MONEY I could make...blah...blah...blah. AGRHHHH!

I don't even know this guy yet and he is already trying to JAM his business opportunity down my throat! Well, needles to say, I just opted out and he just LOST a potential friend (and customer) for life.

When will marketers learn that you need to BUILD RELATIONSHIPS with people first before you even think of telling them about your "biz op". I guess there are still "old school" sponsors and uplines that still teach people that the "in your face ALL THE TIME" method of marketing is the only way to grow your business. This strong arm tactic will NEVER benefit you in the long run. Even if you do "convince" a few people to join you, they will not stick around.

WHEN...WHEN...WHEN are people going to realize that in we are in the "relationship building business" NOT the "convincing" business. If all you do is look at a prospect as another "meal ticket" and approach them with nothing but $$$$$ signs in your eyes, then you will NEVER succeed in this industry! Call me old fashion but I believe that if you care about people, then people will build your business.

Since this guy is in the convincing business, he has done an excellent job. He has "convinced" me NEVER to follow him or take any of his advice.

You shouldn't have to "convince" anyone of doing anything! Just continue to help people and build value into their lives. If they don't join your business, then you should be happy in the knowledge that you've helped them in some way. If they do join your business, then just look at that as a nice little bonus.

Just an "add on" here.

Some marketers won't try and "pitch" you on their business but they have no problem trying to "profit" off you by trying to sell you some tool or system that they say they (and all the top GURUS and EXPERTS are using.) I just opted into a page because this lady from Australia wanted to "share" with me a FREE "secret strategy" to put my MLM business "on the map".

Yeah...her "secret strategy" was a full size sales page to try and convince me to BUY a lead generation tool from her on a 7 day trial for only $9.95 and then if I decided to keep it, I would only be billed a low monthly fee of just $49.95 per month! Ohhh....But I had to hurry because the price was going up to $149.95 without notice. This is what drives my crazy!. This wasn't a one time offer either. Thais was a FULL BLOWN SALES PITCH! The only thing that was FREE here (I guess) was that fact that she was "FREELY" sharing information with me on how to BUY this valuable tool from her. Don't you just love people that "play on words."

I don't even know this lady and she's ALREADY trying to make money off me. sheeeesh! Well, here's ANOTHER one I have to opt out of.

Ken
Very true posts. I am relatively new to the world of internet marketing and am already very wary about who I give my email to - some even seem to have multiple lists even though I only sign up to one.
I seem to wake up to so many emails that I just tend to delete them all so who knows what vital bits of information I might be missing :?

That's true Mike. They always "promise" that they'll never share your information with others but they don't mind putting your information on several lists that they have within their corporate structure. (and who knows WHO sees those.) I have tried to opt off one list and found out that I was tied to as many as 4 others. This is why our industry takes such a beating. People just want to "half truth" you and live by the "sin of omission" instead of being upfront and honest. Both marketers (and businesses they're affiliate with) are like that. Seems like there's always something they're NOT telling you. It's no wonder why there's little trust anymore and everyone is on the defensive. Makes me sad.

The key is that most marketers aren't building a list.
Literally, that's the message that we have to be spreading to people: the need to build a list.

Great post and have to agree with that whole heartedly, it gets annoying when it is that many times a day and their is no value. I had to laugh the other day a marketer whos list I WAS on sent an email saying that he would keep pestering me because he knew how uber cool his product was LOL Well yeah same with mine and every other internet marketer and mlmer!!!!

I agree Rob as well list building is huge and should be a standard practice online for all marketers no matter what opp, as you can build the relationship over time and by offering value and help to people not stuff your sales message down their throat!!

I know exactly what everyone means. Boy, these tactics are sure getting old. I guess it's up to those of us "who get it" to keep on educating others the right way to do business! Relationships first!

All excellent posts. My question would be if they don't work, why do they keep it going?
Perhaps because so many people are buying into their programs thinking that by buying
in, they now have a business.
The times though, are really changing.

This is a Good Thread & the points in it are Excellent. My own take on why some marketers still don't get it, is this, there are NO guidelines about HOW to market on the Net correctly, save for the Few TRUE leaders who educate through either MLSP OR MAGNETIC Sponsoring.

The trouble is MOST think they have to SELL there and then, when its WELL know that people do buy people first & that is done by providing informative Content, as that is what people are after.

Now I and two Business Partners set up a Social network Site, inspired by & which compliments BN BEAUTFIFULLY in a continuation of the learning curve. Equally people are so versed in trying to PITCH ,they FORGET How to network and share & as a result FAIL, because they are not open minded or receptive to the education process.

LEARN How to Earn & the rest will follow as sure as night follows day

What great conversations that are going on here. Another point is to make sure that you take your online relationship building skills back to the offline world once you do "get it". It seems a little bit like an oxymoron, but I think many of you would agree. Always focus on those relationships! :D
