Spam to Relationship?

Postby Lynda Cromar on Tue Jul 10, 2012 9:55 am

What sparked this, is I had a very interesting experience I wanted to share.

Like most of you I get a lot of spam and much of which gets filed into file 13 right away. And this is what most people do.

I got one earlier this week that was a little different, simple a short explanation and then contact info. I sent back a reply saying I hear it all the time, it would be nice to ask first before sending a link.

To which this gentleman called me. We actually had a conversations that tells me that he has skills.

So my question to you is:

Is there ever a time you believe Spam can turn into a relationship?
Do you feel that there is a time when you have been curious enough to at least look at it and ask more questions?
Do you feel it is something that does get results?

He defended it that it was the way he built his team

Caution whatever you do for a method, you are also teaching!

I invite a lot of discussion on this, as I believe it can help people (I do not personally endorse this method)

I look at ROI (return on investment).

I spent HOURS over the YEARS touching base with spammers to build those magical relationships and the ROI was dismal. Spent way too much time (yes, even if it took me only a minute to type up that email) for very little return but it was a part of my learning journey I guess.

How's it working for you?

I am not spending a lot of time there as it is quite obviously not a way to build all of your team.

On the other hand I found it alarming that he believed it to be a viable method and was teaching his team

It's not that I don't believe it can turn into a relationship. It is not effective method to build a profitable business. And it goes against much of my values anyway. I wouldn't advise my team or any home business owner to do it either.

Do you feel that there is a time when you have been curious enough to at least look at it and ask more questions?

Nop. The reason being, I'd not do business or have a customer who has not grown to figure it out. It's not a value I'm attracted to and nor am I going to try and fix it for that person. It's not how I want to attract customers.

Do you feel it is something that does get results?

Anything can get result when one does it often enough.

This isn't the question really of whether it does get result. It is really about having the business owner mindset and being a professional sales and marketer.

That to do what is most effective for the business and there are far more effective methods, to use.

First of all, I do not like spam either.
Most computers with spamware installed will send the spam to the trash before you read it. If you happen to read your spam you might see it. That also sounds like 'scaping the bottom of the barrel' for a relationship.
My suggestion is to send a regular email (no spamming) to build your relationship. In your email just give information without trying to sell anything. It would be like weekly, monthly or however when you regularly send news letters to your email list. It will be information that a person will look forward to getting and you will gain value in your content.
