Great question Lynda. Especially since Facebook passed Google, (not once but twice in the same week), as the most visited website. Is social media a "good arena" for marketers? ABSOLUTELY! If you don't believe that then you obviously didn't attend No Excuses II this year. You have to go where the people are, and let's face it, they ARE on social networking sites. However, I would caution them not to make some of the mistakes that I see everyday. Don't jump in head first and start pitching your product/service/program, don't submit the same content over and over again, (for the sake of exposure). I would, instead teach them to deliver VALUE filled content, via blogs, article marketing, or copy-writing. I would teach them to use social networks to brand THEMSELVES and build a following. If people like what you have to say, and they trust you, they will WANT to know about your offerings. But, ( and I believe that this is where a lot of "newbies" make their mistake), they have to understand that it DOES NOT happen overnight. It will take time for them to build some credibility and become someone that people want to hear from.

Absolutely Spot on with this post. Social Networks ARE Neccessary ,without a doubt, but its the way you use them, that differentiates you.It is after all why they are called Social Networks.

Treat them no differently from how you would socialise offline.

I would suggest to start with Facebook, plug him into the training calls and webinars that the system provides and when she/he masters that let's try Twitter. One of the first concepts learned must be appropiate behavior, not to pitch and always share value.

Social Media is a "crazy" arena! It can be fun, frustrating, time consuming and very profitable at the same time. Since I like simple.......I would advise them to begin by making contacts (then friends), offer value, align yourself with a Mastermind Team (plugging into training) who can help you figure out how to make the most of Social Media whether it's on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter or any other social network site.
Anyway, that is my 2 cents worth. Hopefully, the Newbie would not be too overwhelmed. :)

social media is all about networking. Without any connections you don't have a base to build on so I would tell them to add friends and start networking with people. Build a relationship and also set up their profiles correctly. Most people will be attracted to you by learning more about you so it's vital you fill out your bio sections on sites like face book and put in links to your sites.

From the perspective of someone fairly new to network marketing I would encourage a newbie to go slow and gain knowledge. The rules of attraction marketing apply knowledge=value=attraction.

Only after you thoroughly understand social networking should you venture into this area. A lot of damage can be done which would not soon be forgotten.

I am personally still in the foundation building, learning stage. I don’t feel I have my chops down sufficiently to start using social media. That said I have been active daily on Facebook, and have been building relationships since January. The last thing I would consider would be to jeopardize those relationships with clumsiness.

I am happy to see Courtney here. He has been a great help to me.
His daily posts on Magnetic Sponsoring are ongoing lessons in the right way to blog. He is both gentle and direct, a difficult balance to achieve.

Thanks to all for the thought provoking subject.

I would tell a prospective to sign up on the Betternetworker site. That's how I got started. You can get a great start by asking your own questions to a panel of business owners whom have gone through the same passages that you are going through today. Listen to these mentors and get involved with the discussions that are being held here on this site. Even this discussion is a great start for a new prospective just joinning in on the panel. You can later join other sites such as facebook, twitter and google as you become familiar with these tools and can use them to your advantage.
