Hi,
There's been a lot of buzz about Google +1... But, will Google +1 be able to catch up with Facebook "Like?"
Now let's face it, with right around 700 million users worldwide Facebook is pretty popular and that popularity grows by the minute ...Literally! So I totally can understand that Google wants a piece of it.
You probably heard that Google wanted a piece of that (social media) popularity and created their own "like button" known as Google +1. What it basically is, is a button a visitor to a website, blog or video can click to give that piece of content their "Stamp of Approval."
Now the difference between the Facebook "like" button and the Google +1 button is, that since Google is also a search engine whatever content is voted on will also rise in the search engine rankings.
Pretty cool, isn't it?
So what's your thought on this?
Will the Google +1 button be able to catch up with the Facebook "like" button ...or maybe even surpass it?
Looking forward to your comments!
Ilka
P.S. I just put a video here on BN to show you how you can get the Google +1 Button onto your WordPress blog.

Frankly, I say no! here is my reasoning about that. Google is a search engine, to be clear, their focus is not and has never been social media as is the case with Facebook. Google did introduce Buzz, which basically has totally fizzled.
They also bought Youtube, but that again is not Facebook. The problem as I see it is that there has to be an attraction to it. Facebook is a great social gathering place. Its easy to use, its easy to see what everyone is saying, and its easy to communicate and keep up with your friends, partners, and customers there, I think Google is great at what it does, but just like individuals have to be great at what they do, so do internet sites.

Hi Lynda,
Loved your comment! I think you are on to something...I couldn't have said it any better...
"Google is a search engine, to be clear, their focus is not and has never been social media as is the case with Facebook."
You can't catch two rabbits at the same time
They need to keep doing what they're doing best!

Facebook "Like" is well ahead of the market exposure. I see that little 'like' button' on just about everythng I see on the internet. Google+1 has a long way to go to even start competing with facebook and their fans.

Re: Will Google +1 Be Able to Catch Up With Facebook "Like?"
Well actually google is in front of facebook big time.
Since the google+1 tags is a syngronisation of tags.
google is in the tags not in the wether like or not(true or false/1 or 0).
Google is being used even if you are not on google, facebook on the other hand is used based on the decisions eighter you or the one whom made the website has made.
Even then face book needs Google as well as other search engines to regenerate new tags that encapsulates with their website.
So coming back on the cant catch 2 rabbits at once;
Google captures the ammount of what you need from it (even if your face book or myspace aka a social engine.)
Theoriticly Conclusion
is that google captures allot of rabbits whitout us knowing it.
Google pwns facebook since they can call the shots.
Iff they would put facebook out of the google engine(witch from their perspective wouldn’t be a good idea for several reasons) than people whom are using it are noticing that especially marketers.
Therefore going to leave facebook and going to do something else since allot of us are using google for our Business benefits.
Plus i think google also should deserve the credit from facebook becuase the human rase is consists out of 70% water but facebook is 70% google.
Bow down and obay
Without google there wouldn't be another way!
Phyll Hilton
Practical Conclusion
Facebook is at the moment a HYPE wich is reliable to invest in.
Google isn’t a hype it became second nature and therefore save to invest in, since it only will develop in inovation.
It’s a standalone project were other company's like facebook rely on.
I.e. In short term Facebook will be the thing for you when it comes to investments.
Google will be there for the long term.
It wouldn’t be a bad Idea to therefore invest in both of them.
Kind regards
Phyll Hilton.

Thanks Mario, for sharing your thoughts
Hi Phyll,
I totally appreciate your comment, although I have to admit, I got somewhat lost in the technical aspect of it.
My question wasn't whether Facebook is ahead of Google but whether its "+1" will be able to catch up with Facebook's "Like." In other words, will it gain as much popularity as the "Like."
There are many parts to Facebook as there are many parts to Google. They are two totally different animals.
When I made the comment about the "two rabbits" I was referring to Google being a search engine first and foremost. That's what Google does best .... and maybe it would be a good idea to keep it that way.
Just my thoughts

Use both. Google +1 is going to way outway FB if that button raises your ranking in the search engines. If it works the way it supposed to that is.

Whatever people say...Facebook will never overtake Google. Google is going to do a sneaky thing using the plus 1 since they took Facebook's idea but then again Google is always trying to please the end user. So yeah I predict it will catch up and how.

I don't think it's a matter of "catching up", they are two very different things. People can "Like" all kinds of things on Facebook, from statuses to comments to links. On Google people can only "+1" entire websites or pages. Also, if this does indeed affect search engine rankings, it will be a game changer for the SEO industry.

.
I remember a time when there was this funky little white page that showed up on the internet, when the internet was still this ominous place hackers & geeks hung out and people dabbled in this thing called email. A funky little page that challenged these little companies called AOL and Yahoo for something called a search engine.
That little page with its rainbow colored logo not only overpowered them, but has become one of the most prolific corporations in the world... a little company called Google. And it all started in a college dorm room and a bunch of geeks ICQing their friends to try it out as an alternative to Hotbot.
They said Google would never topple AOL or Yahoo.
They said Firefox would never topple Internet Explorer.
They said Apple would never capture a significant market share in personal computing.
Whether it's Facebook or some startup being programmed in a coffee shop in New Mexico by a bunch of 15 year olds ... Never Say Never. In fact I would argue that somewhere, someone has an idea floating around right now, that will one day push the almighty Google to the back pages and become the new golden child of the online world.
Anything is possible if the connected global community decides to get behind an idea.
But until that day arrives, I personally agree with Joyce on this.
+1 has great potential to explode because of the SEO implications.
Bing's Facebook integration is just one insight into the importance social engagement plays in the search arena today. +1 as a "social function" has pretty important implications in that respect.
