Hi All - I've implemented several ad groups for my web sites and I see something happening with my keywords that isn’t making sense. For example, even though my bid on a keyword is lower than other advertisers, when I search that keyword, only 4 or 5 sponsored ads show – none of which are mine. Even if my bid is the lowest of other advertisers, shouldn’t my ad still show as the last sponsored ad in the list? Even when I scroll to pages 2, 3 and beyond the same 4 or 5 ads show but not mine. Why is that?
Also, I understand the “stupid tax” that google charges but here’s another thing I’m not able to figure out: some of the keywords I’m bidding on are as high as $4 & $5 per click which is way out of my budget. How would could I possibly get a nice CTR and avoid the stupid tax if my ads won’t even show on pages 1 - 3 because of my lower bid? As I understand it, the stupid tax is levied when you increase your bid price on the same underperforming ad.

It could be a couple of things......
Take a look at your campaign settings. If your daily ad budget is too low, Google will limit the number of searches that your ad will show up for throughout the course of the day so you dont go over your daily budget.
Also, if it is a new campaign, Google can limit the number of searches that your ads show up for...kind of like a campaign history or campaign quality score. Particularly with new campaigns and new users, you have not established any payment history with Google. They look at new PPC advertisers as a "risk" until you have established a payment history with them.
But first thing is first, look to see if your campaign daily budget is a limiting factor for your keywords.

Good stuff - thanx Kurt. This makes sense,. My campaigns are new, that might just be it. Tell you what, if nothing else I'm loving learning the in's and out's of ad words and tweaking the ads...
