Hi all

This is IMPORTANT info if you're following MLM TF2.0 course

In module 4 Tim Erway said we need to install "Smart Update Pinger" so we don't end up ping-spamming ping sites.

Being BANNED for ping-spamming sites our blog pings every time we edit our posts would suck, but if you're using Smart Update Pinger, that just might happen

I'm one module behind so I have no idea if the crew at MS has addressed this in a later module or not, but I figured better safe than sorry: those of you that went looking for this plug-in recently, probably found out it's no longer there, and it's for a reason.

Apparently if you're using WordPress 2.1 or above (and if you're new to MLM TF 2.0, you probably are), the Smart Update Pinger will do exactly the opposite of what it should do! It will ping more than once every time a post has been made or modified!

Apparently, the reason it's been removed from WordPress list of Plug-ins is because the developer no longer supports it, and the recent changes to WordPress have rendered it obsolete

The person that wrote this also said there is a solution Called MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer. Apparently it's a plug-in that does everything its predecessor did, and a ton more. I haven't had a chance to gefutz with it just yet, but I will as soon as I'm done writing this.

I made a post last night asking if someone knows where to get the "Smart Update Pinger", but I'll be deleting that post shortly since I just found this out.

P.S. I'm not sure if I should be leaving the URL of the site where I read all this or not. I'm not affiliated with them, but better safe than sorry. If you Google the topic, you can find this out too, so I'm not too concerned about it.

EDIT: P.P.S. Just a little update; I just installed the plug-in.
It delivers what it promises, but they require you to register your email with them in order to activate it, so you might want to unsubscribe at the end of the procedure if you don't want to get spammed.

Does anyone have a recommendation whether I should remove http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ from the "Writing" tab of my WordPress blog and put it into my pinger plug-in list, or should I leave it alone?

I'm just wondering if pingomatic.com might still get multiple pings because it's listed under the "writing" tab.

Definitely a good idea to NOT use the "smart update pinger" plugin, as well as removing "pingomatic" from your ping list.

Pingomatic has had several issues with duplicate pinging rss directories which I've heard has lead to banned blogs in some cases.

Personally I use MBP Ping Optimizer: www.maxblogpress.com
Which bypasses the default "spammy" Wordpress settings and allows for some sweet customizing and manual pinging.

I also use the following ping list:

I've done some more research (there goes the whole day today), and hopefully this is a final update

I just found out that even though the Smart Update Pinger has been abandoned, the "Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger" has come to replace it (spam-free), and it was recommended by WordPress guys along with the one you posted about.

There is just one thing, they provide us with a list of ping links with a note NOT TO ADD to it because the ones on the list are pinging just about every service we need. And it's a short one, too:

So, I'm left trying to figure out is I should include Technorati.com and Worpress.com by hand or not (as recommended by Tim)

Don't want to end up sending multiple pings with my NC; I have a strong reason to believe one of my sites has already been banned one night when I went tweak-happy.

So you think pingomatic should be removed from the list? I do have to say I wasn't impressed with the frequency of their updates on their blog, so I'm thinking you may very well have a point there, bro!

I have located the plugin you mentioned here. However, how do I get it from my zip file to my host account? I'm using Hostgator. There seems to be some disconnect when I try to upload it using FTP.
Would you happen to have some step by step instructions laying aroung?
