Just shoot me!

Postby Bobby Brown on Thu Oct 29, 2009 10:20 pm

I am so frustrated. I'm proud to call myself a geek, yet I have come across a topic in MLM TF2.0 I just don't get, and the instructions make no sense

Module 4:

In second video, Tim says to sign up for a free FeedBurner.com account. He also says I can use my Google account to log in. So I went there, logged in with my Google account, but there is no place to create a FeedBurner account.

Then the video goes on to say to follow the instructions for adding a feed. I haven't seen anything there that says "adding a feed" or anything along those lines. It would be useful if I knew what adding a feed actually meant. I spent a good chunk of a day trying to work this out today by going everywhere else first (Googled 'till my fingertips bled).

Then, the following step was to install and activate the "Feedburner Redirection Plugin". I went to WordPress.org, and I couldn't find the plugin. The only one that is along the lines of what Tim talks about is actually called "FD FeedBurner Plugin". Is this the one?

Finally, he says to look up in the resources PDF to get a link to follow to validate the RSS feed. Yet there is no mention of validating the darn thing in the file.

Could someone explain to me:
1. Once I log in to my Google account, how am I supposed to create a feedburner account
2. How do I add a feed?
3. Where and how do I validate my RSS feed (and what does it mean to validate it)
This module was so poorly explained, it's gone past bad - it's awesome.

Frustratedly yours

.

BANG!
just kidding.

1. login to your google account
2. go here: http://feedburner.google.com
3. go to your blog and click on the RSS symbol in the address bar Image.
4. Copy the full URL displayed in the address bar.
5. Paste that URL in the box on the feedburner page that says: "Burn a feed right this instant."
6. Click "Next" and follow the directions.

Make sense?
If you get stuck click on "help" in the top right corner of the browser window.

Good one Rich

Bobby, if you're anything like me, you're gonna wanna understand what's actually happening when you do all that.

My knowledge is at the basic level when it comes to feeds, but this is how I understand it.

If your blog were a, say Playbot magazine (I don't even know if there is such a thing, but if bots ever get any time to enjoy life, this has gotta be it), then a feed is the fleet of trucks that delivers the magazines to the bot's door and/or magazine stands.

"Adding a feed" means "setting up that fleet" the day Playbot first starts delivering its enclosure-bared centrespreads

Validating your feed means checking if the fleet is delivering the magazines (and not swiping the magazines to take them home - never hire a bot to do a man's job).

You do that by going to http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi and pasting your new feed URL - the one given to you by FeedBurner or the one that you originally copied from your addy window (as per Richard's instructions).

As for the plug-in; that's the exact same one I'm using, so no worries there. Basically what you want to do is paste the URL that FeedBurner gave you into your plug-in options window(s).

Hope this helps!

Richard, thank you so much. I followed your instructions and got it done.

Ivan, you're freakin' hilarious. Your explanation is exactly what I needed.

I'm starting to enjoy this site too much
