WordPress experts around here?

Postby Geoffrey Yumul on Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:31 am

Hi all,

I have started taking my MTF2 video lessons and have built my Nerve Center initial pages. I have wordpress installed on my website. I have a few contents for testing.

Here is my question: What do you do in WordPress that makes you show only the first part of your article and you have to click something like "Click here to read more..." before you can read the entire article?

I know I should do a research on it but I just don't know what term is used for that behavior. Can anyone tell me what term to search for or if you're too kind just show me a how-to link?

I have installed All in one SEO in the hopes that the "Summary" field will help me achieve what I want. But my articles are posted in it's full page despite having All in one SEO.

Thanks!

Geoff

In some themes you can use excerpts as well. It's the section directly under your post editor.

On the HTML input editor there is a MORE tag - drop that in where you want the post to end

You're a life saver! :) That worked for me... thanks!

@Erica: Thank you for the suggestion! I have tried a couple of themes that have this. I will try them on other sites.

Geoff

.

Here's another tip Geoff...

In your template file, say "page_blog.php", look for the following code:
<?php the_content(); ?>

Change it to:
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>

This will adjust your theme to "automatically" use the excerpt or shortened version of your post, default I believe is 55 characters.

Take it one step further...
Install the "All In One SEO" plugin which creates a new field in your post publisher page that allows you to write a customized excerpt for each post as well as your meta tags.

Now you have clean blog posts on your archive page and unique optimized excerpts and meta data.

Hope that made sense.
