Followers vs Leaders

Postby Daisy . on Sat Oct 02, 2010 11:36 am

You've heard that too? Right?

You run into someone that tells you .... or better yet, that 'tries' to sell you on their 'opportunity' and they give you the same old line:

you can work from home, be your own boss, call your own shots, blah blah blah.

then they move the conversation into 'I'm looking for a few good leaders"... blah blah blah.

From that point on the whole conversation sounds like blah blah blah...

I just want to get the brown bag and puke... while the blah blah blah is rolling in the background, I subconsciously (but now I do it consciously) begin looking at the person --- (I mean... rrrreeeeallly looking at the person): how they dress, how they groom themselves, their mannerism, their choice of words, their attitude etc etc.

like... inside my head I ask: Are you the kind of person that inspires leadership? Do you bring out the desire in others to lead? Are you REALLY looking for leaders?

I have learned that leaders are demanding, leaders keep you on the edge, leaders are one step ahead.

In addition... I also have learned that a GREAT majority of people want to be lead, want to be part of a team (not lead the team), want to dabble with 'their work from home opportunity' (as long as it does not take away from their illusion of life)

So, if you are looking for "a few good leaders" - don't waste your time with canned questions, ask poignant questions that will test your ability to attract leaders.

Understand that not everyone operates at 100%, be ready to have a lot of 30%, 40% and 50%s

Oh... and lastly. Don't expect to attract leaders, if you yourself have not become one.

ps: It's okay to be a follower... there are many wealthy followers. Coca-Cola was followed by Pepsi

Which one do you like to be... and why? Don't be shy with your answer... it may help someone else that may be 'stuck'.

Hello Daisy. I hope you are well.

This depends on the individual and how willing they are in doing what needs to be done in order to become a leader and not a follower. Me personally I am a leader and I intend to keep it that way. Their are many people who do the 'blah blah blah' you mentioned but that is something that will never change. Many people will use this approach regardless and some may succeed here and there whereas others will never succeed.

Also very good point that you ended with. I completely agree and that is something that relates to nearly everything because you cannot expect others to do something, if you yourself don't do it!

I wish you all the best in what you do.

Kind regards

Hi Saquib,

Thank you, I had a GREAT week, hope you did as well... (I'm sure you did, you seem to be the kind of person that looks at the glass half full!)

I suppose you are correct... understanding that there are many 'blah blah blahers' is a good thing, and rising to the challenge to make things happen sets the Leaders apart from the Followers. 8-)

Which one do you like to be... and why?

I'm on a volunteer board where we actively participate in fundraising activities.
A couple jointly lead and spearheaded an event. One of the volunteers showed up with a broken ankle.

Two different responses.

One half of the couple offered hugs, condolences, urging this volunteer to go home, get some rest, take care of themselves. Result: heavier burden on the rest of the team but the volunteer felt loved, appreciated and could indulge in some well deserved self pity.

The other half of the couple said "Sorry to hear that, we'll shift the team duties around and you can drive instead of being on your feet."

I'll leave it up to others to determine which half of the couple would be a better leader but I know who I would want to work with if my financial success depended on being lead by one of them.

To success,

I consider myself a leader. What I look for in leaders are people with similar characteristics to my own. They usually display a "can do" attitude. They are "go-getters" and you know them when you come across them. Not all people that do business with me are leaders. But every now and then I run across one. If you're not a leader, you need to be coachable.

Cynthia thank you for sharing,

This is why I emphasize to 'entrepreneurs' or 'self-employed' is the importance of understanding what it is that they are looking for. Are they looking for leaders? or... simply followers?

Each one will have a unique demand... while leaders are autonomous and fire blazing, followers require nurturing and guiding. Yet most important when attracting these people to join your cause or team... one has to keep in mind always: What can I offer this person to help them achieve their goal. (not, what can they do for me.)

Keep leading the pack!

Well said Daisy. Leaders or not, everyone needs to be looked as "how can I help them" versus how can they help me. It's always funny how that works. When you help someone, you seem to get more back than you gave.

I was going over my notes from the No Excuses Summit and one thing Mike Dillard pointed out is knowing your prospect. Get into the mind of your prospect and then direct and target your messages to them.

Very sage and sound advice.
Have a good one,
Joyce
