Worst Advice From Your Sponsor or Upline?

Postby Donna Cox on Sat Dec 18, 2010 11:08 am

I would have to say the worst for me was:
Years ago when I first started, I had no idea how to begin. My sponsor told me to buy leads.
I bought nearly $2000.00 worth of leads and literally spent the whole summer calling them. 10-12 hours per day, at least 5 days per week. Because I live on the east coast, l had a time zone chart so I called the PST times zones later.

I didn't take my children to the park or the library or any where. I just kept promising them that we would go somewhere really soon, but we never did.

Because I dial fastest with my thumb, the muscle that leads from the thumb to the wrist stayed sore. I got 5 sign ups total and at the end of the summer 4 of them dropped.

Hi Donna,

I don't think you are alone with this. Not only did I buy a ton of leads but the phone bills of $300+ per month just about killed me back then.

But that wasn't the worst. The worst thing my sponsor ever told me was to buy Genealogy Lists. Those are absolutely the worst leads you could ever buy. Luckily soon after that I was introduced to "Attraction Marketing" by reading Mike Dillards Magnetic Sponsoring. I haven't bought a single lead since.

Since you are still in the industry, what changed for you?

Hi Ilka
Yes, I'm pretty sure mine were Genealogy as well. What was worse is, the $2000 was part of my inheritance.

What's changed is:
I learned to get unlimited long distance on my phone.
I found what I was good at, not what my sponsor was good at.
I learned to do tons and tons of research.
I learned to forgive my sponsor because she was just telling me the same thing her
sponsor told her.
I learned not listen to anyone that hadn't made any real money in the industry.
I learned to make myself available to my down line, but not do the work for them.
I learned to be open minded about things that make a network marketers life easier.

That's just a tiny tiny bit of what has changed for me.
After I made those changes, I started having tremendous success.

Hi Donna,

Those are great changes and very valid points. I especially like the one about...

I found what I was good at, not what my sponsor was good at.

If we are doing what WE are good at, we will be much more successful.

Thank you for sharing this great list!

Among the world's WORST advice:

"It's a numbers game. Some will, some won't. So what? Someone's waiting."

Here's the reality:

It's NOT a game. FEW will. MOST won't. Guess what? NO ONE'S waiting.

Almost all the time we spend talking to most people is a 100% WASTE of time, because we're saying the wrong things to the wrong people.

Then we fail, then we quit.

And that's a bad deal... but there's something we can DO about it. Immediately.

Get the RIGHT information, then say the RIGHT things, to the RIGHT people.
If what you have is so great, why are you asking people to sign up for it? Shouldn't THEY be asking YOU? Sign up for this Free MLM Boot Camp. Click HERE.

Get 99 no's and you'll feel great when the 100th says yes. Does that mean only 1% will join me?

Please take my advice and don't listen to that crap. If you speak with 99 prospects that are into mlm then your percentages are much higher. I'm speaking from experience.

Hello Donna, Now That I know a lot about this industry our uplines gave a wrong advice because they did not know what they were doing also LOL, I remember when I first got started I use to promise my wife and my baby girl we will go to the park or go to the movies all the time but I never live up to that promise because I was just like you calling those leads or going to hotel meetings :)

Now it seems like when I spend more time with my family the more money I make LOL Just my belief

I sincerely hope that this thread opened some eyes.
I wish I had found this sight along time ago, it has more integrity than any forum I've ever been on.

With all the negativity going around lately, this is a nice plug for BetterNetworker, Donna :)
I happen to agree with you.

The worst advice that I have received from my upline is talking to everyone who says 'no' to me. That was frustrating to even say that.
I have learned to talk to everyone and let them get to know me first and what I am about. Establishing myself as an expert in the field I do not get the 'no's' anymore. I give advice and give the information freely. I let the market decide to come back and ask questions or further information.
I am not wasting my time nor anybody else's to what information I am able to render to help someone get their health back on track.
I am enjoying life much better. I spend more time with my family and out of the house more in outdoor activities. We watch television less than ever and spend that time enjoying each other more. This is what life is all about. ;)
Just people seeing us as a happy family, they too will ask questions and would want to join in on the celebration what life has to offer to all who maintains their health.
