Hmm... if you are an SEO Tech..what do you think would probably be the best technique for building backlinks and doing SEO ?
what could you suggest ?
would it be bookmarking? blog commenting? article writing?

I would have to say, utilizing all of the above. I'm no expert in SEO and its something that takes time to understand and master. There are many, many, many ways. I would focus on one thing at a time. What I mean is, start back linking, forum marketing, optimize content with relevant data. Analyzing whats working and not working. I believe when it comes to marketing online, its all about trial and error. The more you realize what's not working, the more you attend to do what is working. The more of whats working = developing success.

My answer would be all of the above and then some! I don't think that i would say there is a "best technique" per se, It has more to do with the getting the best quality backlinks which can come from a variety of pages and sources. Building backlinks is more of a "seat of the pants" strategy that one just learns from doing.

Any one of the methods you mentioned could have good and bad links. For example, some will have the "nofollow" attribute in their link so that link won't help you rank your page, but if the link is on a high traffic site, you may end up with direct referrals which is still traffic.

Honestly the best links are going to be a mixture of the good, the bad, and the outright ugly. You have no control over who links to you by their own means...thus your site could have links from poor sites as well as good sites.

I strongly advocate building the best quality links that you can obtain and get them from a variety of sources. The most important thing to do is to make sure that the links you are pointing back to your site are relevant to your site and have variations of your targeted keywords in the anchor text.

If your site is about "apples" then don't link from sites about "oranges" -- Keep the content topic relevant.

Having a way to track your site is important, you can use this data to see where your traffic is coming from and what type you are getting. Kerry

SEO (Selecting Every Opportunity) can be as hard or as easy as you like the choice is yours, essentially its down to building backlinks to your site and Keyword research. I have written 2 posts on Wordpress SEO 1 took an hour and can be found HERE and the other took me 10 hours of hard graft in front of a comp screen and can be found HERE.

For me SEO is very interesting and can be highly enjoyable just watching your google rank go up and your Alexa rank shrink is great! have a look at this video on building backlinks as i think it may help!

Guys there are a lot of methods of SEO-ing

Onsite SEO or What most would call, On Page Optimization, what this means is your website is optimized for keyword occurrence, normally 3% to 9 % of the keyword you are attempting to rank for. You must consider h1 tags, "bold" text, and natural flow of the content. As an seo expert both white hat, and black hat, we have learned keyword ratios that flag as spam to google. Other things to consider are meta content "Description"...

I remember my years in IVY, when google was relatively young, we could get a site indexed with simply spamming the word in our content description and keyword description, ohhhh those were the days...Build it, spam it, ping it and your site was BOOM indexed for "HotRods", then the algorithm matured and well these things just don't work. Again Google wants to see natural order in your content description as well, and for all those guys who wish to get PAGE one status in weeks, or who want to HIRE an SEO EXPERT, to get YOUR NEWLY PURCHASED DOMAIN NAME RANKED ON PAGE ONE for the keyword "Home Based Business" consider this. Domain age is a heavy variable when considering SEO. Your newly minted site does NOT STAND A CHANCE... at least not in 3 weeks...as google needs to learn to trust you, and make sure you are not a SPAM SITE

Go ahead and buy backlinks, anchor text links, and saturate the internet with content...do this too fast and you are engaging in a practice called "GOOGLE BOMBING", yes Google figured this out a few years back. When Former President Dubbya Bush popped up first for the keyword "VILLAGE" idiot, the google bomb campaign was sponsored by anti-war, pro democratic activist, and SHUT DOWN, or sand-boxed relatively quickly.

So ONSITE SEO is basically great flowing content, with the right mix of keywords, and properly labeled <tags> a well written content description, and well LOTS AND LOTS OF CONTENT....PERIOD

Offsite SEO, well DOFOLLOW is important, Anchor TEXT is important, Neighborhood Is Important.
What do I mean by neighborhood ? well Good standing sites... Think of a HOME, alone on the prairie, and it's worth 50K, Manhattan Beach 2.5 million, New York City ? uhhhhhh not sure this response can fit that many zeros . The point is this, Your website gains value from the community that links to it. Now here is a piece of advice, guys...RELEVANT CONTENT LINKING BACK TO YOU MEANS DIDDLY SQUAT

Why the hell do I want to link to a competitor ?????

So community outside RELEVANCE is not only sensible from a free enterprise perspective, but damn right proprietary.

If a site talking about NASA has a pagerank of 9 and wants to LINK TO ME, guess what...whether the content is related or not..LINK VALUE will FLOW...

Ways to generate links ? Without giving away the FARM, a VPS, or virtual private server, with root access, that can mirror product downloads from sites like Adobe, Mozilla, Norton Antivirus...and many other trusted products

now whats a mirror ? a mirror is basically a download resource. If you become a download resource from these companies they will pass page rank link juice, with PAGERANKS as high as 9 ...

For aged sites preferably 5 months or older this is a great technique for building A GREAT COMMUNITY of Backlinks, while RISING UP THE SERPS

I agree with what everyone has contributed so far. SEO can be tricky, can be difficult to understand, and extremely time consuming. It could take months for your information to appear there, even if you pay a experienced SEO professional. Google changes their standards ever so often and it can take months of work building to getting your information on the first page. It's no real best techniques, its depends on the quality of website and area that the site falls under.

I would always recommend learning for your own knowledge but if you need that information up ASAP to generate income for your business. Also if you look at Google, their strategy has shifted to the area of rewarding local business listed for free and PPC campaigns. SEO is being blocked and if you heard the stories of well known marketers information being suspended or blocked. Google view now is why should they reward marketers or SEO companies information to be found on page 1 or 2 and their not making any revenue.

Either start a PPC campaign and you may want to learn this also but you can loosing money in the beginning if you do not have a clear understanding or seek a professional servicing company specializing in getting the information up quickly.

For back links, consider

1. Article writing and submission.

2. Press Releases.

3. Web2.0 properties (Squidoo, Hubpages, Digg, Reddit).

4. Get on someone's blogroll (you need to build good relationships with site owners to pull this off).

5. (MAYBE) Forum profiles and signatures.

BIG TIP ---> Have a variety of links going to your site. Having just one type of links is not going to be as effective as say, article resource box links + web2.0 bookmarking links + forum links.
