This is exactly where I was going when asking the question. Is the game changing? Is online becoming so powerful that the players "online" that are wearing anything they want behind a computer, that when they come out into public...it doesn't matter what they wear....people will respect them and their advice?
It's like dating...when I was dating, it was about the real live interaction with a lady. Now, most dating is done online and without actually meeting a person "live" until you really find yourself liking this person. Then once you meet them, you can probably wear whatever you want as you have already gained the "respect and likability" from that person.
I will still wear nice pants, nice shirt, and typically a jacket when speaking in front of a group of people but I typically will take off the jacket when speaking in front of a small group in a more casual environment. But, I still like to dress up as i think it makes me "feel" good and puts me in a business mindset.
Thanks for sharing!

Re: Dress For Success! What does it look like?
I'm like you, Eric.
I grew up wearing a suit and tie from elementary school. I wore the uniform from a private school. There was a culture shock when I went to public high school. Nobody dressed up for school. So I wore suits on weekends and dating. I wore suits through college and interviews for jobs. Wearing suits was the norm of the day.
The job I got required a uniform, not a suit. It was more casual and comfortable to fit in the environment I was in. My wife changed a lot from there. I wear a suit for court appeareances and casual for church.
When I got promoted, the suit was the norm again.
My son never knew what I did until he saw me getting ready to go to an extra job wearing a uniform. I never wore the uniform or interfered with his life. It was a funny shocker!
Now, retired I got a job that I could do either suit or uniform. I chose the uniform because it's more casual.
I wear less suits now than ever. More functions are casual, fashionable wear that goes with everything.
I still don't wear jeans even when riding my motorcycle!
Dress For Success: What does it look like? You asked. It's presentable fashionable wear that goes for many occasions including the local motorcycle club bar!

LOL! Nice Mario! I think we both agree...it depends on the environment so everyone feels comfortable but still provides the professionalism needed.
I was really taken back when I saw the video about the "No- Excuses" event and saw how casual people were in an environment where people are paying money to come learn from the experts.
This is what sparked this conversation.
Thanks for everyone's reply's!
Have a great day,
Eric

Re: Dress For Success! What does it look like?
Hi Eric,
Dress for Success -----Absolutely so! I have come from a Corporate background and I used to cringe when the company used to have "dress down days". I tried it once and once only and really struggled to maintain the work persona that I had developed wearing clothes I would normally wear at the weekend when I was operating at a much slower pace!. I have my own businesses now and largely work from home and will always dress as if I am going to the office, I find that I am able to conduct myself in a professional business like manner, whereas I don't see myself as business like when I have my jeans or gym wear on, if that makes sense??!!
Kind Regards,
Jayne.

If you want to be taken seriously and as a successful person, you need to dress that way. Also if you represent a health product, you need to live a healthy life style and be a product of your product.
My job is to Save a Heart a Day, and if I am not healthy, myself, who is going to listen to me?

I think dressing for success for men is a jacket, shirt and a tie is optional. That is my favorite way of dressing. Not overdressed and not to confining.

Eric, I think you are right on the mark here. Dressing for business does affect your own frame of mind, so why not your audience too? When you feel "pulled together" you come across that way. And don't forget dressing 'appropriately' - especially the women. You want your audience to concentrate on your words, not your legs or cleavage! Katie makes a good point as well. For a casual group training, you can wear less formal clothing, while still being professionally dressed. "You only have one chance to make a first impression" - it's too true, and no matter how wealthy you are, you can dress casually and still look like a million dollars!

Re: Dress For Success! What does it look like?
Great feedback! I am a 100% believer in dressing for success and how it makes me "feel". If I am in gym shorts sitting behind a desk...it seems harder to pick up the phone and talk "business" and be passionate about what I am talking about.
Maybe there are people that love to dress in their PJ's at home working but I will tell you that if you really want to be productive....feel productive with the right mindset and dressing professional makes you act professional.
Jayne, I am right with you!
Thanks for sharing as we have gone from dress for success on stage presenting to actually dressing for success in your day to day Business life.
Emotion and how you feel about yourself is the difference between continually putting off a phone call and jamming on phone calls, followup, emails, etc....
If you don't believe it...try it sometime and watch how differently you feel and perform!
Thanks!!

erictippetts wrote:Thanks Lynda,
I agree but I was very taken back when I saw the video's and how the presenters were dressed. My opinion, this is why alot of people don't get taken serious in the business as they show up to meetings.
Network Marketing is a profession for people that want a great lifestyle with massive financial opportunity... but, treat it like a business and it will pay you like a business.
Eric, I think you may have hinted at the answer to your own question when you mentioned people like Steve Jobs.
Certainly, if someone HAS to wear a suit and tie every day (and don't necessarily enjoy it), then they might find it very attractive that the people onstage feel completely comfortable showing up as an authentic person who's simply going to be themselves.
During a 4-year run with a particular network marketing company, I emcee'd 23 international events ranging from crowds of 500 to 2,000. I believe I wore a suit onstage for perhaps three of those events....and a jacket and slacks for perhaps another three. In Hawaii, I wore Tommy Bahama shirts with slacks. From the photos from Barcelona, it looks like I wore jeans and an untucked Robert Graham shirt.
In other words, I wore what I wanted to wear so I'd be comfortable onstage...and that it would be a match for what people at the various meetings were wearing.
But here's the distinction: at every one of these events, attendees were encouraged to come dressed in "business casual". Had they been advised to wear "professional attire", I would have worn a suit every time.
I like suits. Very much. And I think it IS important that we "dress for success" to make sure we always show up as someone worth taking seriously. But that means different things in different crowds.
I've never attended a No Excuses event but, knowing some of the personalities involved, I can imagine the dress on stage was pretty eclectic. Some of those guys were from the same company that I was from and they may have kept the Dolce-and-Gabanna, Guess Jeans, Robert Graham, etc. "look" that was popular among leadership at that time.
Today, I'm with a company that has more of a business attire culture. Attendees to events might not wear suits but most of the leaders and speakers on stage do. It's congruent with the material being taught (financial education).
Great thread, Eric.
Tony
P.S. By the way.....who's your favorite suit-maker?

@Eric
I feel your attire should go with the feel of your presentation in a way. I was at a Anthony Robbins seminar, and on the day that he was talking about finances he wore a suit. The next day, he spoke about relationships and he wore a polo shirt with jeans. In the end though, you should wear what you feel comfortable with. Attire that fits who you are. I can tell you like to dress with suits, I say you should stick with that.
