Richard Bravo here and today I wanted to dive into the topic of "Offline" Marketing.

The Direct Selling industry is steeped in a long history of "traditional" offline marketing and advertising methods such as post cards, business cards, classifieds and one sheets, solo ads in physical newsletters, home parties, hotel meetings and spinning circles at local coffee shops and diners.

You didn't mention meet ups. That is my new favorite. I also use business cards, but with a flair. It has to have a great slogan or catchy phase that get them to take action. I have also in the day had Radio advertising. I also like to go to good local business events and mixers

Tried them all.

My absolute favourite was going to a show, bought a table, dressed up in the prettiest chiffon nightgown I owned, offered a free draw for a weight loss product I carried and answered every question that came at me. "Yes, I work at home. Sometimes I don't even get dressed."

Fabulous response for more info about the product (course I collected all their names and phone numbers) and lots of puzzled interest about actually making money working in my pjs. (Had them check off a box which indicated what would be the best part of working from home for them.)

I had fun, moved a good amount of product, had a lot of laughs but was still honing my skills on offering the business opp so didn't do as well there. I was actually too excited and talked my way right out of sign ups.

Hi Richard,

Right now for me it is talent scouting and keeping it simple with +ve & energetic people persons, at Coffee shops, gas stations, customer service personnel that really help, on calls I make, etc.

I'm going to have some fun with drop cards soon.

Offline is also a good training ground to practice what we hear and connect directly and in the moment. I'm going through Todd Falcone's stuff, which is great.

Regards,

John

Well, Richard, I tried many methods when I first started out.
I passed out cards to all my neighbors inviting them to a business meeting. I had aligned some of my upline speakers there to speak before them. Everything was laid out for a great social evening. Nobody showed up.
I agreed to a radio announcement with a friend for advertisement. The radio time was at a most inconvenient time of the day that nobody heard it. That radio program shortly went off the air.
The best thing I have enjoyed the most is speaking to people. I do get out of my comfort zone in public speaking and talking to several people in and out of my target market.
Some things works well with others, and some things does not fair well with me in branding yourself in business.
It is still nothing like being a product of your product and being a model for what you believe in, and speaking to people and getting their reactions. It is different trying to convey that message online.

I know exactly what you mean - I've done the same thing, at shows and otherwise.
Shows are a blast and you can definitely drum up new business and move product.
But that was something I learned the hard way too ...
"know when to stop talking and listen"

That's awesome John.
Do you have a special business card or brochure or something that you give them?
Exchange numbers and email?
What's your process with the people you're meeting?

What's your plan with the drop cards?
Do you have a specific message or call to action you're using?

In all of these are you directing people to get online or do you do the follow-up etc. over the phone etc?

PS:
Thnx for the shout out of your blog design - it's gonna look sweet when its done

Were you able to determine what the issue was that caused a zero turn out?
Some things I've learned doing local meetings are:
Give enough notice prior to the meeting - about a week.

Follow-up couple of days before and the day of. The day of was a big one. Following up that day and even a few hours prior, like mid day if it was an evening event, went a long way to getting people to show.

Not enough rapport with the neighbors you invited?
This is always a big one. If people don't know you, you're relying on your delivery of the invitation and the strength of the invitation's call to action and subject. This is where having a local team helps because you leverage their relationships and trust within their sphere of influence.

We ran 15 different branded ads showcasing various products with comedy bits and a story during the summer on a local station during rush hour (5pm) a few years ago. I don't think we made a single sale "directly" from the ads. What we did see was a lot of comments like "oh yeah I heard about Body Balance on the radio." My biggest take away with radio was that it can work really well to run when you can do it long term for branding purposes. i.e. establishing the brand as a "household name" type of campaign.
The medium to me at least, doesn't seem profitable for immediate action like "visit my website for XYZ."

It can do well for events and short term promotions too.
We had a local dj with a great following come to a local training event one year where he did a LIVE broadcast 4-6 times from the event. He talked about the product (focusing on Body Balance as the flagship product - i.e. branding) and interviewed us and others from the team. At the end of each segment he'd invite people to come down to the event. I think we had a dozen or so people show up directly from the radio. The big return that event was he got on the product.

Now that I've finally found something I can get behind 100%, I've gone all out courtesy of Vistaprint.

I customized business cards, postcards, pens, bumperstickers. They really are a must when you're talking to people and I absolutely agree with Diane earlier where she talks about how if you're doing something you love, you'll never work another day in your life. High FIVE!!

I like the postcards b/c you can customize and add information on them depending on who you are giving them too. They are great to leave in specific places (as well as the biz cards) but I am also of the new thinking that I am becoming a product of the product.

As an affiliate marketer, I could never really provide an honest review and now I'm a walking testimonial.

Cheers,
Terri
