Your Story is Your Brand

Postby Eric Walker on Sat Jul 30, 2011 12:57 pm

Hello BetterNetworkers,

As a network marketer/home biz owner how important do you feel your story is for your business?

My belief--

You aren't born a super hero, but you BECOME one as a result of circumstance. That there was an "inciting incident" that sent you off on your quest. That your back story is valuable and if you have yet to tell it, you should. It's an important (and trafficked) marketing piece.

Your story is your brand. Your story is an initial task that requires your attention. It makes sense to be able to tell your story the best you can. If done correctly, you can get a lot of mileage out of it.

For example:

Just take a look at the Magnetic Sponsoring letter. Read Mike Dillard's story within that letter -- "From waiting tables to 7 figures in less than 18 months, and Dillard helped 1,000s of people achieve financial freedom by telling the truth about doing MLM in the Internet age..."

Point is...

Everyone needs a good story to reign in facts - across all industries and genres.

As a network marketer/home biz owner how important do you feel your story is for your business?

If you've taken the time to craft a unique story and have published is on your About page at your website, or have used elements of your story in sales copy or emails, etc, I invite you to share it with me -- either in this thread or privately.

Why I'm asking...

I'm currently participating in a "My Story" writing workshop and looking for examples. I'm developing my own story, and want to immerse myself in other peoples' stories. At the conclusion of my work developing my story, I'm going to help others develop their story.

What are your thoughts about this?

As a network marketer/home biz owner how important do you feel your story is for your business?

This is a great post. I have to say I share and write my story out, as it is similar to Mikes. I used Magnetic Sponsoring & Traffic Formula 2 to walk out of my Day JOB, two years ago, it is a Completely truthful Scenario, achieved with some hard work and Determination.

I use it daily & it works, as people like to relate to someone they feel has achieved what they want to and like truth as well.

Awesome post! I have to say I highly agree with you on that. Nothing is more compelling than a story... especially ones like Mike Dillard's. Our story is definitely important. That's why we should make it and tell it well. :D

Thanks for the comments Pete, I appreciate them. It also brings me onto a Point made elsewhere in this Forum by Lynda Kromar, that 3 ways are also important for Prospects, because THEY can hear YOUR Sincerity when on that call & if you RELATE your story to THEIR current situation, there is ONLY one result.

I think your story is most powerful
promotional tool and if you would tell to big audience
your exceptional story you can attract hundreds of people
to your business just overnight, because people like people!

I think there are no other so attractive and inspirational like
exceptional story with path to success.

And sometimes I think: "does not matter how many times you
fall down and up it is all included in your personal story and experience
that you will be able to tell to others to attract "!

Hello Eric,

Sir this is probably the best explanation I have read or seen on the subject of personal branding, as it relates to IM, MLM and NWM.

I have heard so many marketers sya to brand yourself so as to appear as "The Expert" or An "Authority".
Things is though, how can and do you do that if you are just starting out?

You do it by, as you have so wisely stated, by telling your own story.

We all have to start somewhere. And, if we are open minded and willing to learn, we will continue and develop our branding story.

I think about David Wood and how he started by working out of his van, now he is very successful.

And as you mentioned, Mike Dillard and his powerful story and journey.

I think people, especially newbies, can better relate to our personal story as our brand more so than we trying to coming across as the expert.

Great post, thanks for sharing it.

your story can be part of it but I don't believe that it is all of it.

What you have to say to yourself is what unique attributes and skills do I have that I can bring to others to increase the value in them. Then how can I best define that so that I am branding myself.

When helping someone do that, I ask them about that. For instance what is your current occupation and how can that help you build your brand? If someone is a plumber for instance is there a way to bring the things he does in that job to network marketing or online marketing. What attributes, and I am not talking about cleaning a drain okay, but business person attributes you could bring to your online marketing?

This is A great thread, with some valuable contributions being made.

Lynda you are so right with what you say its important to define what attributes you have to set you apart. Equally tonality of voice plays a major part in that as well, as in the way you convey your story, knowledge, information to the other person & perhaps just as importantly is a sense of Urgency, which also helps to set you apart from others.

I agree, Willie and with what Lynda says... but I think what makes sense is that your story is the foundation of your brand, almost like a motto. Mike's story is certainly compelling and you always see it in his marketing.... same with David Woods and Ray Higdon, who talks about going from foreclosure to top-earner in his company....

These stories are powerful and the beauty is that part of working in this business is that you get to create the story along the way and share it for the rest of your time.....
