What Was Your Biggest Fear in Getting Started Online?

Postby Mary McLean on Mon Oct 03, 2011 4:36 pm

I was just wondering what is the biggest fear that people have when starting out in the online world in their own business.

Is it fear of failure?
Fear of not being good enough?
Fear of no-one joining your list?
Fear of managing/running/organizing your own business?
Fear of not being able to do the technical stuff?
Fear of not having enough money for the cost of entry and ongoings
Fear of not being able to...

How did you overcome your fears or how did you get started and what did you do to get that first dollar?

Hi Mary. I seriously think people are afraid to let it be known they are new and just learning what it takes to succeed in this industry. Therefore they parrot what they've been told or read somewhere as if they have this incredible knowledge and are a great leader. Giving, of course, the perception that they've "made" it. This is all passed off as posture.

I admire people who start a business, share what they've learned (not been told but actually learned) or are experimenting with and then share the actual results. Whether it be in personal development, lead generation and conversions, trying out a new product, etc. No posturing just honesty with a natural progression to success. Shared the whole way.

That type of approach is going to pull and retain a lot more people in your organization than the BS most people feel they have to promote to maintain the perception of leadership.

I don't know what fear to be afraid of. I fear nothing.
I don't know what it is to fail at anything. I don't quit what I started. Sometimes you have to change your way of thinking to get a new direction to a problem.
I have been in and out of marketing for over 30 or so years. Now I have the time to concentrate more on marketing ideas.
I always wanted to do something or promote myself to the marketplace somewhere. But where? How?
I needed a vehicle to promote myself to the market.
I found a vehicle/product that I can truly believe in. It has proven itself to me healthwise. I got so excited about the results that I have to tell everybody about its benefits. I was taught to talk to people, handing out brochures, flyers, and anything locally to get the word out. You don't fail with little results. You find a new direction.
So, I came online to learn how to market myself. I came to the BN to learn from other experienced business owners just how it is done. How to think professionally business all the time.
Now fear sets in! Where to start. What to ask. I knew nothing about what I was doing online. The best place to start is at the beginning. Just write on what I do know, get involved with the discussions, participate and motivate others to learn as well. Never copy from any mentors, but to emulate them into your own ideas and develop your own business structure.

Chris,
That's exactly what a great majority of people say...
I think the reason is that, apart from everyone's own personal situation, they don't comprehend the potential of an online type of income or the leverage available via the internet.

Joyce,
You always write very considered thoughtful posts!
You should gather them all up, make them into an E-Book and give them away as a guide to your newbies!

Mario.
Are you meaning you had no fears until you came online?
If you follow a mentor, really emulate their methods, you probably can't help but succeed.
That means actually finding out what they do in all their business day too.
How they discipline them selves, how they answer the phone, how they manage their teams and so on.
It's easy for some to say..."Do this" or "Do that", but that's only the tip of the iceberg!

Success demands a total restructuring of our whole being!
And fears are a massive emotion which unfortunately, as William Shakespeare said are traitors!

"Our doubts are traitors and make us loose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt"

Thanks for the input all... :)

Yes, Mary.
We have challenges to meet and not so much as fears, so to say.
I wanted to learn an efficient way to travel to work. I bought a motorcycle and took the motorcycle test and obtanined my license. I later went back and took another course for the experienced motorcycle rider. I still practice every day to know my skills, the vehicle's condition, and the road's condition, and my ability to handle any situation that I may encounter. I started out with a 400cc automatic. Now I have a 1832cc 2012 Goldwing.
I wanted to learn about trucks. We see them all the time. I took a course and obtained my CDL and was driving across country in a few months. I have been all over the United States and even up through Canada.
Getting back to the topic at hand. We all have challenges we have to meet. After all this training I've had, this seems the hardest challenge of all to accomplish. I can't copy the many mentors, but to emulate them and use some of their ideas into my own. The next challenge is finding my main market. Many of which do not use online. A business development has evolved in finding what works to the best of my abilities and training. That is one of the challenges we meet when we come to a site like the BN. It's all about changing our mindset!

Wow!
You take it all on for sure Mario... :o

I think we all get a bit of a shock when we come online first, as most have never been in business, let alone in sales or marketing.
Then we have thrust upon us, copy writing, grammar, dialogue, product knowledge, forums, dashboards, computer, website and internet mastery, to name but a few of the new skills to learn.

Was wondering how long it takes most people to get their lists (data bases) started, once they make up their minds to commit to an online business.
Then the next thing was, how long after that did it take to earn their first dollar, then sustainable income?

Just doing a survey.
Will get a poll going later when I work out how to word the poll!
Always learning :geek:

I think this site was built for people who are interested in going into an online business who are not necessarily know how to run a business. Basically people who are not in business to become business minded. I still don't know all the tech-stuff mentioned here, but I'm sure know that there is still a lot more to learn.
Out of all the 'fears' and challenges to meet, there is no time to quit now. We have only just begun to learn how to run a business like a business and not the emotional roller-coaster it seems to make us into.
There is one thing I learned is that 'fears and emotions' have no place in business. We wake up every day to meet new challenges and to continue to build our businesses.
I look forward to your survey. 8-)

To be honest for me it was that I was afraid not to do it. I was driven to learn, and I had to get to a place where I could make it work. There is nothing in life that is worth working for that is not attached to some fear, because we have a lot invested into it and its new, something we have not yet become skilled at. I had the same fear walking into a new job. You learn very early though that if you are going to succeed you must walk through some fear.

Hi Mary, I guess for me the biggest fear was leaving a career of 20 years where I knew exactly what I was doing and that I was good at it, and having to learn something new and completely out of my comfort zone. I'm new at all this but I'm learning a lot and loving it!
