How to setup my blog for posts and a capture page?

Postby Tony Hadley on Thu Nov 24, 2011 11:35 am

Hi. I want to setup one of my Wordpress blogs with a capture page. I'll write posts on the subject and also sent traffic to a capture page on the same blog/domain name. Obviously, I dont want the people at the capture page to see the blog until after they opt in. Could this be a special page in Wordpress without any widgets, etc. on it? Can I do this with a standard theme? Do I need a special theme for that?

I've seen this where a blog is, for example, mydomain.com, and the capture page is mydomain.com/capturePage. But, you don't see the blog or any pages or references to the blog from the capture page.

How can I set this up? Thanks

Tony my advice is to simply look at what others have done and learn by them. I admit unashamedly that I am an affiliate for this site but I am not suggesting in any way that you buy anything at all (unless of course you want to? but this person is at the very top of the game... and has been for years.
Just look at how he has laid out his site and if you like it ... copy it, good luck regards Jim T.

ps: the only thing that I don't like about it is the drop down box...still what do I know?

Hi tony..why dont you insert your capture page links in your back end email campaign when people opt in to your form on the blog..you will be building stronger relationships with them plus promoting your capture page..

Tony,
I don't claim to be an expert but your dilemma is kind of universal. At the end of the day, we all have a URL to promote so we have to decide which URL to promote and how.

If I choose to use a capture page, I have to promote THAT URL. If I want to promote my blog, I promote that URL.

Again, at the end of the day I have to type one of the two URL's onto my business card, marketing ad, flyer, etc.

I have to be honest, I've struggled with this for a long time Tony and have a couple of suggestions. I use the Flexsqueeze Theme (I won't use my affiliate site here out of respect) and have the choice of different templates to use within it. I can choose a capture page template within the Theme. So even though I've successfully created a capture page in my Wordpress blog, I kind of lost the blogging power to drive traffic to my capture page.

So I'm kind of stuck in a 'catch 22'. I can send people to the 'actual' blog portion of my site after they submit their information on the capture page, but how do I get people to my capture page in the first place.

My solution is to build my blog as a website. Any Wordpress blog can be 'converted' to what appears on the surface to be a 'regular' web site. In your settings--->reading tab, click static page and make your front page a page other than your posts page. Then make you posts page a page called 'posts'.

This way your site's home page can act like a capture page while still keeping the blog power of your site in tact.

To be honest, this is a really 'cheap' quick fix and probably not nearly the best option.

But I can tell you this. I use this method for almost all my sites, primarily my Ambit Energy blog, and I get results.

So although I'm not going the true-blue capture page route, I opt to get better ranking within Google by sacrificing the bold capture page for better rankings. I can prove it too. I'm on the third page of Google right now. Google Ambit Energy and my site (my signature website) will be around the third or fourth page.

I actually had first page rankings but did foolish things that cost me that 'honor'. I've since changed my ways and am striving to gain that first page ranking again.

Per Google analytics, I'm not necessarily knocking it out of the park Tony, but I'm getting respectable results.

Mind you, most of my work comes from blogging, linking with like sites and adding a couple of RSS feeds.

'Ambit Energy' are competitive keywords so I'm pleased with my results and I just keeping striving to do better.

I hope this helped a little. Again, feel free to observe my site (see my signature) and see how I use a 'regular' home page and I added my posts at the end. Observe my links, RSS feeds, widgets, etc. It seems to work for me.

If I can help, feel free to contact me at any time.

I think, I haven't tried it, but here is something to try.

Write your posts and make then pass word protected. In your side bar have an ad with an opting for telling the person they must opt in to get the passcode. Have the passcode in your autoresponder email that will unlock the content.

You can also find plugins that are called "content lockers", if you want to spend a few bucks. They work as popups but they block the content underneath the popup until the visitor takes what ever action you want them to (opt in, like a fan page, etc.).

One thing to note. I'm not sure of the end goal you are trying to achieve. I'm assuming you are using this as a list building technique.

To be honest, it might not be the best way to go. Reason being, you are gonna have a huge bounce rate. People are not gonna opt in to something they know nothing about. If you are giving great content and giving value people are gonna want to hear more from you and opt in to your list so they don't miss anything. If they don't know what kind of value you are offering, then why would they opt in.

Again not sure what you are trying to "lock", so I could be wrong. Just some food for thought.

If you haven't already set your meta up with a title to subscribe to your rss feed. There are also options in plugins to subscribe via email and a plugin to remind people to subscribe to your rss at the end of the post. Many people forget the power of rss.

As mentioned above you can password protect posts and pages.

You could do an HTML page and add it to the Public_html folder in cPanel. You would need to know some HTML to do this or hire a webdesigner. Just as an example this is a capture page I made for Craigslist:

Links Removed / Content Edited By Support
*Use your signature for personal/business links
*Do NOT post any kind of sales pitch for your business, or affiliate product in the forum.
*Please read the forum rules and guidelines before posting in the future.

http://www.betternetworker.com/page/wel ... rnetworker

(Do not enter your information just an example that I have onhand). Very basic, but it works ok.

You could also create a subdomain. I have never done this, but I think you can use install a wordpress on a subdomain. This is also in cPanel. So it will look like this subdomian.yourwebsite.com, the title for your subdomain replaces this www. part of a website. This would allow you do use a wordpress theme and create your capture page put your capture form from an autoresponder. There will be no reference to your main blog.

Subdomains are considered a different website by the search engines. In fact if you host two blogs with different domain names no Hostgator for instance. The second blog will just be a subdomain of your first.

Use a keyword for the subdomain name. Many do this to test a keyword before they buy a domain name using that keyword.

Not sure just an idea may work and may not. You have your regular blog and two subdomains, put up a summary of your post on your main blog. Include a link to the your capture page on the first subdomain. Then have them taken to your second domain with the entire article on the third subdomain. Be sure to hide your third subdomain from Google (under settings and privacy in Wordpress) or people will find your third subdomain (with the entire article) through the search engines. It is crude and may be an easier way to do this. Just an idea.

Hope this helps some.

Hi
You can do this quite simply.
I have most of my capture pages set up on Optimize press, or on external html pages however one of my colleagues uses a wordpress plugin called "WP Squeeze page plugin" - it's not a free one (about $47 I think) but the results are pretty good.

Literally just upload the plugin and you have a whole section that is hidden from the main blog with some really good high converting templates. I'm sure there are others out there, just do a quick google search and I'm sure you will find some more.

Hope that helps,
Nicky

You can also create a capture page in wordpress and then use the READ settings to set that page as the default front page. Then password protect all of your posts and email people the password when they opt-in. That would be the simplest and least expensive. You can do this with all themes including the default wordpress theme 2010 or 2011.
