Was It The Product or the Opportunity?

Postby Stephen Meyer on Sat Mar 10, 2012 12:59 am

When you first got involved with MLM was it because of the opportunity and business model or was it because of the products? What made you choose the compant you are with?

I'm curious why most people get in this business.

For me it was the opportunity.

It's funny because when I was looking for a company to join I was first looking for the product I would really love to promote. I wanted to look for something I can truly earn residual income and earn at least $10,000 a month. I searched for the right company for about two weeks. I was looking for a product, team, years the company has been in the market, how easy was the product to sell, the autoship, requirements to stay in business and the compensation plan. I looked for several companies I won't mention the names but for what I saw it did not full filled me to actually be excited for it. Until..I saw Lightyear Wireless.

What really captured my eyes was that I was looking at the top earners site. I looked through it and it was the #1 team in the whole company that had created more top earners and leaders. The moment I saw the opportunity I contacted the top earner and told him I wanted to
become part of his team. He gave me other links to look at and there is where I got shown the opportunity presentation. There is where I found what the product was which is wireless. I got even more excited because everyone uses a cellphone I just had to show people a better way to save money while getting free service and getting paid teaching others how to do the same. Which was perfect!

So as you can see the opportunity was the reason I got into the company. The product is important but if you don't have the best team, support from people who have already made it and a simple system to follow, would be hard to succeed. I wanted start my businesses right because I didn't want to end up like most people who join a company and have no team support or system to follow.

For me it was the business model and opportunity.

My first MLM sold cheap and nasty cr@p so it definitely wasn't the products. For some reason the stuff sold by the boatload. There was a never ending supply of happy customers. I wouldn't have touched 99% of the stuff.

Looking back I should have pick a company with products I believed in, although it didn't prevent me from finding reasonable success with it.

Thanks Erica and Alan for your replies.

About that cheap nasty stuff. I also looked at the business first but couldn't sell stuff with that description lol :)

With the way things are today and the lessons people have learned I think people now want more than
just a good business plan. People appear to look at the Integrity of the company and the products. When I mention Life Force has been in business for 26 years people take it more seriously. The same goes for product ingredients. They look for quality products.

Not a lot of replies here so I'm not sure what most people looked at first, product or business. It seems like combining both in a presentation would be the way to go?

I agree with you Stephen - these days I couldn't let my name be associated with a poor product. I was young and inexperienced back then and came from a corporate sales background so I thought I could sell anything and it didn't matter. My opinion has changed over the years.

Originally it was the product, I was more looking to market something online as a regular affiliate, and found a company with a market leading range of products in their niche, and thought any distributors would be a bonus.

For my second company after getting a taste for the network marketing model I was looking for a stand out product, something I could really believe in, wrapped in an opportunity with maximum potential and credibility.

I still get free products and a little bit of cash from a site I SEO'd a while ago for the first company, and am still building the second one, and stepping it up now with the arrival of the next generation product this week.
