Are you scared of the phone

Postby Chris Brown on Thu May 03, 2012 9:53 am

Hands down this industry leaders make more money on the phone than anything else. We hear of stories where people where people drive traffic to their website and people join their company. TRUE!

You will close more people over the phone that over the internet this is even true of the biggest gurus -they still make tons of money because they drive so much traffic to their site. (Email has on average a 2% response rate)

I have seen people on this forum who have 10 leads and complain because nobody still bought.

If you use direct mail it has an average of 20% conversion rate. If you use the phone you have a 10-80% conversion rate.

I'm not scared of the phone... just who answers.

It's not my favorite tool, but certainly essential.

I don't think I'm scared of the phone, I think rejection is what's scary. Hearing someone say no is a lot different than reading it form an online or not seeing any sales online.

However, I think this is a skill that can be fine tuned because like David said before me, the phone is essential for us to be successful as industry leaders.

Someone who is scared to phone anyone, lacks one very important trait - Confidence! And there is only way to build it, thru a competency based "coaching" program.

Most people in this industry only talk about the how to - the reason people don't follow through is like you said confidence. So the question is how do you build confidence?

The book Think and Grow Rich say you must believe if you believe this will move you to action. You have been condition to have no self esteem or high self esteem and or self confidence you can build your self confidence by conditioning yourself because friends, family, media have conditioned you.

The bible says if we think about something and when that something enters into our heart and become fertile it moves us to action James 1:13-15.

Great point. With our team, how we acquire confidence is by becoming competent (the knowing part) and through plenty of practice. The coaching part is the glue that binds these together. I know there are other ways to gain confidence, but this one has worked wonderfully for us. Hope that helps, Chris.

One of the thing I do Is I gather my leads I look at the name of the leads grab my phone like I am really calling that person I look at the name of the lead and I act like I am calling that person and I sell that person.

I have my people do that for a few day then they have the confidence to follow through. I got this idea from Dan Kennedy he calls this mental rehearsal.

I'm afraid of the person on the other end of the phone. They might reach through and choke me :-)

A great way to build confidence is knowing who you are calling. If your leads are highly qualified before they ever get to you and you know it it's a whole lot easier to call them. Not having any idea of who you are calling because your list is made up of random names is a lot harder.

I prefere talking to people who want to talk to me.

Also, the best way to build confidence is by doing not by buying into some course.

I am not neccessarily afraid of the phone, but I am always available for a phone call from someone who needs my assistance. I give my information to anyone freely. It would be their decision to do with it as they please and they may call me at anytime when they are ready. Being available to listen is important when they are ready to call to order. I do not have to convince anyone to do anything without serious thought behind it. You want to be a friend for a very long time.

One of the best ways to overcome phone fear is to get on the phone and make a bunch of calls. I did this by calling cheap leads. If you are just starting out, grab a list of 50-100 leads and realize that you are going to make mistakes in the beginning. Accept that and it will become much easier. When I accepted that I was going to mess up a lot in the beginning, it totally helped me to relax. When I first sat down and looked at the list if people to call, I said out loud, 'I feel sorry for some of you, because I'm going to stumble and fumble' but I KNEW it was what I needed to do to get good at being on the phone. Also know that the industry leaders have made the most calls and probably hear the word "no" more times in a day than most network marketers hear in a week.

For many people it's easier to start with scripts. Think about you objective when you are calling people. It's not to get just anyone into your business, but to qualify the best people for your business. Have a strong posture and confidence on the phone. Also, strong belief in yourself, your product, your company and the industry. Your prospect can sense if you have strong conviction or not. Ask your prospect genuinely curious questions as you get to know them and what their work experience has been, and why they are looking for something now. You are looking for their needs, strengths and desires and how you can help them reach their goals.
