"I'm just being authentic" you hear.
But really, do any of the great masters swear? Brian Tracey, Jim Rohn, Dennis Waitley? Gentlemen from a past era who rose to extreme success and presented themselves with professionalism in their dress, their language, their manner.
Is swearing a step up? Being authentic as they say. Does this new generation of the "rich and famous" who are "authentic" going to make this world a better environment for our kids to grow up in?
I know I don't hesitate to listen to a CD from Jim Rohn in front of and with my kids. But am I going to do the same with the "authentic" leaders who are emerging now?
I think not but then again maybe my expectations are too high.

It's probably not very acceptable but people do it anyways, it just depends on your own personality. Some people do it just to "throw" people off a little bit.

I have literally taken many swear words out of my vocabulary.
When you lose patience, you begin to swear in disgust.
Such language not only embarrass your audience, but also reflect on who you are.
I did not grow that way so I don't use them. It's like, ' if you don't speak 'french' then don't use it in a sentence.'
You can only make a first impression once.

I can tell you a story of a one business meeting i was at. After the meeting was over one of the reps got to relaxed & let the ow "S"boom slip out i must say it made the meeting go from tense to relaxed in 2 seconds flat.

I hear you. I have no problem with someone relaxing in their private (relaxed) state. It's not professional in any way shape or form to litter your words with a vocabulary you wouldn't use in front of kids. Would I accept anything that was going to teach my kids (insert the word of your choice here) and the answer would be NO. Do I want my kids to listen to my training/personal development? YES, what better way to enfold them in a positive environment !
Do I want my kids to go to school and tell their teacher he/she is full of sh*t because he heard it on a training session I was on. NO friggin way !
There are standards of higher excellence (hate to say this but listen to our politicians) as they are perfect examples of vocabulary usage.

I come from the same background you do Joyce and that word and others like it make me cringe. I would say most realize that its not professional. I think we have to look at it from the point of view of can I be completely comfortable with that person. And yes would you share what they say without editing with others? Authentic doesn't have to mean be something that makes other uncomfortable.

No!
Unless you drop a bowling ball on your foot fowl language has no place in a professional atmosphere, really no place at all.
Don't get me wrong, I can use swear words with the best of them;however, I choose not too and find if I leave them out of my vocabulary as a rule they do not creep into my business conversations. If I slip up I am truly embarrassed.
My tax guy will probably wonder where I am next year, but using the F-BOMB several times (while I was a paying customer) pretty much sealed the fate of my no return next tax season.
And no, I have not ever slipped with the F-word during business and hope I never do!
