Have you taken a “gut check” of your network marketing business lately? Are you struggling to motivate your team? If so, you need to read this blog post and then come back to this newsletter.

Now, let’s get on with today’s topic. The gut check. I want you to take a few minutes to assess your coaching skills.

When I think about a gut check, I think about the skills a network marketer needs to become successful in a particular area. These are the fundamentals that you need to talk to prospects or lead your team.

As for coaching, this requires a commitment to four key areas – boldness, interest in your team, ethical behavior and being “in the business.”

In order for you to do your coaching gut check, you should understand what these key areas mean. Here’s a brief look:

Are you bold?

When you’re bold, others will follow you. They look for the bold leader to help them get to their next success.

What it takes to be a bold coach:
» Be personally productive.
» Let your downline see you face fears.
» Let them see you make phone calls and presentations.

Are you interested in your team?

As you’ve heard me say before, if you’re interested in helping others more than yourself, you’ll go far in this business. Just like your interest in your prospect, you should be interested in your team.

What it takes to be interested in your team:
» Show people that you care about their goals.
» Talk to your team about their goals.
» Talk to your team about their specific areas of doubt.

Are you ethical?

Ethical behavior will put you above and beyond in this business. True leaders are honest and never speak ill of anyone.

A few ways to gut check your ethics:
» Am I thinking negatively about any team member’s goals/attitude? Is it constructive?
» Do I cut corners in front of my team?
» Do I show favoritism to certain members of my team?

Are you in the business?

If you’re truly in the business, you have the responsibility of being “the” source of information. You also teach your team where to find information and resources.

What it takes to be “in the business”:
» You must be connected to the company’s source of information.
» Share information as often as possible with your team.
» Show your team where to find information.
» Train your team to invite, sell and train. Repeat.

If you take a few minutes to do this gut check periodically, you’ll most likely find areas you can grow and change. I believe in each of you and your abilities to create successful downlines. Remember, leaders are made, not found.

It's time to quit when you realize that the product you sell is not competitive. If it's too expensive you just can't sell it even if it's a high quality product. It happened to me once, but I promised myself it won't happen again. This time I am not selling products, therefore expansion is inevitable. It's that simple, really.
Profit from your downline, globally. All sectors of goods and services are included. Forget auto-ship, monthly fees, recruiting investors and selling products. Earn from everything that your downline buys. The world of MLM has changed!

Hi Donnie,

I've been frustrated and angry with network marketing many times over the past 15 years. Part of the reason for that is the promise I got when I first signed up that it would be "easy" if I did what my upline told me to do. The business model always sounds good in theory.

The turning point for me was when I did what felt right to me, which was learning internet marketing strategies to build my business. Now I earn enough money to feel motivated to keep going.

No independent business is easy, something I try to keep in mind as I watch my sister-in-law struggle with her retail bike and ski business. The alternative for me would be to go back to secretarial work, being under the thumb of my boss, I think I'll keep working at it.

I hope that helps you with your own decision, thanks for sharing so honestly.

Hi Donnie,
When can I quit Mummy?
Well this was the question my 6 year old asked me in May 2011, you see he wanted to quit swimming lessons because he struggled to master breaststroke. It took 2 attempts to pass stage 4 of his swimming lessons and 2 attempts at passing stage 5, plus countless individual lessons to master breast stroke!
"Why do you want to quit Nat"? I asked him
"Because it's too hard and I'm never going to pass" he replied
" So work harder, to swim better and your swimming will become easier" I said
Roll onto present day he now swims for our City swimming Club has won a medal and a trophy. He swam in a sponsored swim for a Teenage cancer charity last thursday, swam 2046 metres in 1 hour and raised a ton of money to help others. He will be swimming in his Club championships at the end of September. Even though he's mine, his continued efforts, determination and focus have touched and inspired me enormously!
WHY? simply Nat has a focus and a big GOAL....cabinets full of medals and trophies.
Oh and by the way Breast stroke is his best stroke!
How am I applying this to you, because he carried on no matter what he didn't quit, even though that would have been the easiest thing to do, his efforts became habit forming, building up more than enough momentum to start achieving successes! and now well I struggle to keep him out of the pool!
Kind Regards,
Jayne. :)

Yes, Donnie I have thought about this question many times. But I could never do it, because I believe when something is giving to you, it's for a purpose; Not accidental, ever! And network marketing has taught me that when your in the lowest place of your business is when your actually growing. I also received checks like you described, and I was "salty" because I knew I could do better. It was also a lack of focus on my part and mental toughness to push through. So I say this to say, this has only been a question for me, I never acted on it. Maybe what would help, if you figured out what your supposed to do in life to help the world. I needed to find that out, and you can find that out by what your gifts and talents are. Hope this helps Donnie.
