Don't forget some of the free ones too. For the most fundamental of steps into keyword research, websourceit is a neat phrase comparison tool which uses Google's API to compare search terms. I blogged about it here.

Note the comments at the bottom, from Dimitris (one of WebsourceIt's developers), the form initially offers a comparison between two compare two keyword phrases, but hitting TAB allows up to a maximum of 5 phrases.

Take a look - DEFINITELY one for quick and dirty keyword research.

I'm in agreement with the previous poster - Market Samurai is the tool. This was a featured tool from the 30-Day Challenge folks. I stumbled upon it and it has some amazing features definitely worth checking out with the others mentioned before making a decision.

Kindly,
Diane

jkhoffman wrote:If you're serious about keyword research, there's really only one tool I would recommend. It's new, so not many people know about it yet... which is why it hasn't already been suggested. But, it's the best there is.

It's called Market Samurai, and it costs $147. It's worth many times that.

Having a big list of keywords is great, but not of much use unless you know the competitive landscape for each keyword. Each and every keyword is its own market, and you're going to be up against different competitors in each.

You need an easy way to sort of the "easy to rank for" keywords from the "this one will take me a year to rank for" keywords, and Market Samurai does that. It does it elegantly, and in a way that makes you think, "This is how is should have been all along!"

At the recent Stompernet conference, all of the SEO experts were salivating over this tool. It compresses what used to be DAYS of research into hours.

I don't make a dime for referring you to it; their affiliate program isn't up yet. But, it's damn good. Try the free trial while you can.

Warm regards,
Jeff

This looks pretty hot Jeff!

I will be checking this out this weekend for sure and see if can unseat wordtracker and spyfu.

See you at the top Jeff,

Forest

Wow..it seems quite a handful of people here using Market Samurai.

As for me, I using Nichebot and Google Free Keyword tool. It's been working well for me.
And sometimes, it may reveal certain keywords that are profitable.

I downloaded and ran Market Samurai, and it has a really great feel to it, but much of it means nothing to me at this stage. It has loads of information contained within and I'm really keen to take it for a spin and get it working for me. Need to read through the doco thoroughly and watch the vids. At the moment, I find it a little intimidating. Like others though, I get the feeling that this could be THE keyword research tool to beat all others. Nice product.

John,

The videos are excellent and do not assume any advanced knowledge. Take the time to watch them in order and you will be on your way!

The videos that come with Market Samurai are great, and I definitely recommend you check them out... but here are two more excellent resources for anyone wanting to master the tool:

  1. Ed Dale's 30-Day Challenge. This is 100% free, and a FANTASTIC educational resource on Internet marketing. Market Samurai is used extensively throughout, and I learned a ton about how to best use its many features here. Again, it's free... no strings attached.
  2. The Niche Marketing Black Book. I wish I could provide a link to this, but the only way to get it (legally) is to fill out the survey when you download the trial of Market Samurai. So, fill out the survey. ;)

Hope these are helpful!

jkhoffman/Diane,

Many thanks. Both very helpful. I'll be checking them both out this weekend. I really need to get my head around this software asap since I feel it has tremendous potential. Cheers.

I'm pretty late on this topic looking at the dates on the posts, but I have to agree about Market Samurai. I heard about it when I purchased Commission Blueprint, and it's been worth every penny. Using it with the feature that hooks into a paid subscription to SEO Digger may or may not be worth it (as SEO Digger isn't exactly cheap), depending what your business is. I tend to just grab the keywords I can get for free from SEO Digger and put them into Market Samurai to analyze from there, and it's helped identify a few really good ones. If you're not familiar with SEO Digger, here's a wee quote from the front page of the site - "SEOdigger is an interesting tool where you can enter your domain (or competitor’s) and find out which of your keywords rank high enough to be listed within Google’s top 20. It also compares keyword popularity with Wordtracker and Overture. Additionally, report data is CSV exportable. Site does require registration for complete use."

Good luck!
Anastasia
