How Do Backlinks From Forums Work?

Postby Gregory McGuire on Thu Aug 06, 2009 1:52 pm

I've been doing a lot of backlinking stuff recently, and I've got a question when it comes to forums and blog commenting. Are you credited with a backlink for each post? For instance, if I posted to the same forum 10 times in 1 day, would I get credit for 10 backlinks, or just 1? Just curious.

I've used Market Samurai to analyze my backlinks, and what I found is that you do get credit for each post. Also, if you are using anchor text in your backlinks that will further your SEO efforts.

One thing I like about forums is that you can have more than one backlink per profile, so you can build backlinks for more than one page at a time. Any time you can leverage your efforts like that is great.

Seriously? Kind of makes you want to spend your days in forums, doesn't it? At the very least, it encourages you. Thanks for the help.

Hey Andrew

Thanks for the info. I have been doing that myself but I have never tested it beyond just how my sites are doing. It's nice to see that there is tests done to prove it.

Hi guys,

Actually, it depends on what you mean by "credit".

If by credit, you mean does Google notice the backlink, the answer is YES.

If by credit, you mean does Google raise your rankings as a result of multiple backlinks from one forum, the answer is NO.

A link coming from one domain counts as one backlink (for the purposes of SEO & raising rankings).

Multiple links coming from one domain still counts as one backlink (for the purposes of SEO & raising rankings).

Market Samurai and other tools are simply acknowledging that the link exists. What Google counts as a unique link and how much SEO juice it gives you as a result of ANY link is unknown, but testing shows that there's no significant benefit for the purposes of raising your rankings.

Regardless, your participation on forums should have more to do with helping others, learning yourself and forming new powerful relationships. Any SEO benefit should come as a side benefit and should not be the reason why you participate in forums, social media and other interactive online communities.

Hi Ferny. Thanks for clearing that up. I've only been actively posting here less than a week, and I've learned a wealth of stuff already.

If I'm understanding you, you're saying that if I write a blog post, and in that post I have text link to one of my videos, then as far as search engine rankings go, posting another text link in another post a week later won't help? That's good to know. Thanks again.

Check to see if the link is nofollow or not, if it is nofollow you won't be credited for page rank purposes

Didn't you mean "Multiple links coming from one SITE still count as one backlink (for the purposes of SEO & raising rankings)." ???

Because I think, for example, in case 1, where links are coming from www.domain.com/subpage1, www.domain.com/subpage2 and www.domain.com/subpage3 you would get better rankings from google than in case2, where only one link is coming from www.domain.com/subpage1 .... am I right? Or did you mean really DOMAIN

Alright, this topic is really controversial even among many other SEO experts.

Here's my opinion, if you're posting on a single forum with your links to your websites for the sake of getting better ranking, don't even think about getting to the first page. It won't work.

Here's what I do if i wanna get multiple links from the same domain:

This is just my way of building links, so don't believe or trust my advice if you dont want to.

Get different anchor backlinks to different pages on different pages on the same domain.

myage1 with anchor1 on domain.com/url1
mypage2 with anchor2 on domain.com/url2

or

mypage 1 with anchor1 on domain.com/url1

mypage1 with anchor2 on domain.com/url2

I guarantee you get more value using this method than getting backlinks to the same page with the same anchor text on the same page.

IMHO, I think multiple links coming from one domain still have their benefits in SEO. Just it depends on how they are placed.

On different pages? with different anchor texts?

That's why internal-links is so powerful. They all come from the same domain name, but to different page from different pages with. different anchor texts.

Just my 2 cents
