Branding in a Domain Name

Postby monica odenwald on Thu Aug 27, 2009 9:05 pm

Dearest Members, I am about to follow Mike Dillard's instructions and register my very first  domain name....but.....does it matter what name I choose? I mean in regard to keywords/SEO. Do I brand myself starting with my domain name? like would http://www.monicaodenwald.com be suitable for a capture page...or do I mention the company I am branding...like http://www.fhtm.com. That does not look right.
Okay if anyone can help me I am waiting with the domain registry on the "other" line...to register...I'm so excited!
Many thanks,
Monica

Hi Monica:
One thing you don't want to do is put the name of the Company in your domain. If they go out of business, your domain is then useless. (Of course, if this is your own personal Company, then that's a different story). It should be something that gives others the general idea as to what your business is all about. You can use your own name but it's best to save that for your blog. I would get at least two domains right away. Give some serious thought to the title of the domain.
I wrote an article on choosing a domain name. You can check it out here is you like:

It might give you a few pointers.

Hi Monica,
I would recommend doing a quick brainstorm on what exactly your expectations are for the domain.
If all you're looking for is a domain to use for your landing page(s) that will be used for a particular marketing campaign, for a specific niche or company or target market, then I would try to get something that helps convey and reaffirm your overall message.

So let's say you want to target people looking for a way to create an extra $1000 per month in the next 90 days. You could look for a domain like...

1000BucksIn90Days.com
First1000BucksIn90Days.com
ThousandDollarsIn90Days.com
90Days1000Dollars.com

See what I mean?

The next thing is obviously getting yourname.com. Whether you plan to use it right now or not, if it's available you should always secure your name before someone else does. More unique names aren't at risk, but you'd be surprised some of the names we've gone after that were taken and we could have sworn no one else would have wanted the domain.

First thing I did when each of my boys were born was register theirname.com. Everyone of us has our domain, facebook, myspace, twitter and youtube accounts. The future of the web and social media is going to be HUGE. YourName.com will be one of the most valuable pieces of digital real estate you can own.

The next strategy is creating a brand. This is pretty simple as well. If you have a name for your team or business or system, etc., get the name. e.g. DenwaldIndustries.com, DenwaldEnterprises.com. You get the point.

My domain portfolio is pretty big. A lot are active, but a lot are just there for a rainy day.
I'm always looking for domains - everyday. You never know what you'll stumble on. But that's a little different topic I guess. Point being however, don't be afraid to buy a handful of domains that you may be able to use for various purposes. At less than $10 they can be great investments.

If you're really torn there's a little strategy I use to test markets. There is some risk involved, so be aware.
If you just can't decide and would like some market feedback, Make sure the ".com" is available then register the ".info" version for $0.99. Run your campaign and see how people respond. The risk I mentioned is that you pick a winner get it out there and someone scoops up the .com before you do. So this is a bot of a gamble, but really effective if you manage and test quickly and move fast if it look like you have a winner and grab the .com.

Hope that helps.

So..

My personal strategy, which made me own 4 of the top 10 spots on google for my company was this:

use the company title in the url. or at least their product. best scenario? both, combined with a '-' dash.

for example my company is Nuriche

their main products are Live and Revive

SO, for my downline, I secured:

www.Nuriche-Live.com
and
www.Nuriche-Revive.com

my site is www.Nuriche-Ment.com

these rank very highly for the search term "Nuriche"

next, I have a second group of sites...

These are my brand names - the ones which are easy to remember, easy to spell and great to hand out as business cards.

third, and finally, i have a niche market site:

wwww.howtoloseweightdieting.com

this is because the search term for that phrase is over 1000 visitors / month

this brings my product into new and exciting territory.

This way, I'm conquering three things, without trying to cram too many factors into one site.

And at only $7.99 per site, I'm not out a lot of money at the end of the day should anything go south.

I think it is still important to do a site ,does'nt have to be amazing, but suitable and relevant on you with your name as the website . That way people can check up on who you are and find out about you.
I have found that people are impressed that I have gone to the trouble to develop my own site.A bit like 'street credibility'.It just seems to be more 'grown-up' than just having a blog.
You can still promote your products or whatever you are into if you want or you can just have links to the business opportunity website.
I hope that helps
All the best
Wendy

Personal branding is why we do what we do; people join people and not necessarily the company.

Yes. When I read this statement it was like a thunder bolt. I understand now why value and leadership is so important. I really see value in my company and understand why I was not having much success translating my enthusiasm into tangible results. I was doing everything my upline said but alienating my friends. I mean how ethical is is calling up an old friend and hitting them up for a sale, or asking for a favor (code: sale).

I am still working on my site but I feel more professional doing this. It is like everything I have ever done is coming together now.

I agree NEVER brand a company > I made that mistake early on and when the company left or closed I had to start from scratch. Being blonde, I did that about 5 or 6 times before I decided to find a name for me.

Every name I thought of was taken so I accidently picked MLMBlonde cause I was going to build an MLM business and I was blonde. No one had taken that so I started using it and It made life lots easier.
