I totally agree with your post and find it more than a little interesting that nearly all the major PPC advocates on this and other networks have suddenly gone quietly over to SEO which I have been using since the second month of starting internet marketing. It seemed as apparent to me then as it does to so many people now. Perry Belcher and others have been saying this for over a year and were dismissed out of hand by the PPC crowd.

Although this is a great post, I can't help
myself.
I'm on a roll after the million dollar question. :)

Here are my top 10 reasons these top 10 reasons are wrong:

10. Of course it's advertising. You do it to get people
to come to your site. Then hopefully they buy stuff.
9. SEO is a process to get people to your site. If you can
build credibility on your site, who cares how they got there?
8. SEO doesn't "go viral", your content does. If your content is
good, (see #9)
7. Who cares about organization? All that matters is if you sell
stuff once someone gets there.
6. How does SEO make the user experience better? The content
is the same whether they found you on organic results or the
PPC side.
5. Who hasn't met Google by now?
4. Once again, it's your content that matters, not what gets people
to your site. Do you really believe that you will appear to have
more authority because your prospect didn't click an ad to get to
your site? Why?
3. It would take too long to come up with an answer to this one, so
we'll just go with it.
2. PPC will get you far more traffic far faster. Really.
1. I'm not laid off, and if everyone was, nobody would have any money
to buy your stuff anyway. Besides, if you wanna make money fast and
you have good offers, PPC is the fastest way to make money online.

And nothing is free. Even if all you spend is time.
Oh wait. Then there's effort.
So unless your time and effort are worthless to youk,
nothing is free.
Except air.
And even that ya gotta work for.

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I
enjoyed writing it.
Everything works if you're good at it.

Hey Valarie - sorry, it looks like Dave woke up on the wrong side of the bed.. in Afghanistan.. AH!

Both of you have good points, but here's the deal:

- YES, I was broke and unemployed when I first got online. And I worked my butt off to learn internet marketing and create a full time income from home - much ado to free marketing (seo or otherwise..)

- YES, PPC gives you faster traffic and MORE traffic...

BUT (brace yourself because here comes the most over-used cliche' ever): don't put all of your eggs in one basket!

I went through the SEO Networker Mastermind in the beginning of the year and totally blew the doors off my business.. But making that kind of serious cash gave me the funds to do: PPC, postcard marketing, outsourcing some marketing, etc..

I've actually hired my first fulltime employee to help me build about a dozen niche blogs... And ALL of these blogs will be built mostly on SEO principles to get traffic. Why am I spending all of this money on SEO, while doing all of this other stuff?? Diversifying.

I want to have 10 blogs all doing $2k-20k/mo. All of them SOLID on top of the search rankings for their keywords. And for many of the reasons Valarie described:

Number 10 and 9 and 4 - it's NOT advertising! Many people know the difference between the "sponsored listings" and the organic ones. Psychologically, the organic ones are the "real" websites that are "informational" and not a long sales letter. (hence why review blogs make so much darn money - hint hint)

SEO is definitely HUGE though because it gives you the "big picture" of the internet. (At least it did for me w/ SEO Networker). When I fully understood the "big picture" I knew I could apply this across a TON of different websites and niches, and that's EXACTLY what I'm doing...

Oh Dave I see your point. I'm actually a SEO rookie but find the views here quite interesting in that Andrew's agrees with SEO being better and Adam understands that you need both. Based upon my knowledge today I think I have to agree with Adam and understand as I build my business to use SEO techniques so I don't go broke and once established combine SEO and PPC.

Hey there,

Remember everyone that you really NEED PPC if you are going to properly implement SEO effectively.

How would you know which keywords convert best to leads and sales and downlines if you don't test with PPC first?

The best course of action is to test keywords with PPC and discover which ones CONVERT the best, and then go after SEO for those keywords.

Otherwise, you could end up optimizing for keywords which are not truly "buying" keywords and are more browsing keywords, therefore giving you traffic....but not traffic that converts. Not all traffic is created equal.

Hi Kurt point well taken. However, aren't there tools available where you can determine which keywords used in PPC advertising are converting? Also, if you're just beginning to market you could use that strategy as a way to get traffic that will convert with SEO right?

I concur with Adam and those that mentioned PPC could be vital to all other SEO. I too am setting up Niche mini blogs targeting keywords. Original, helpful content in article form has always stood the search engine test of time.
Not putting all of your eggs in one basket is so true. I found it best to use the slight edge (great book by the way) when it comes to marketing. Leads coming in from 4 or 5 different forms of marketing is best.

Thank you so much for your article. I intially agreed with it all, but I think it was my utopian hope that SEO was all I needed. Thanks also to everyone for their great candid responses. I was just trying to figure out whether or not I could build my "empire" solely on SEO ... but for timing wise, it just takes WAY too long.

Also, what Kurt mentioned about testing your words is also important to track your ROI and conversion... this is still the bottom line of this and any business.

Thanks for everyones thoughts. Learning so much.
