Hi guys,
I'm hoping to find some help in the arena of running an e-commerce site on a Joomla platform. This will be an evolving subject, as I intend to take the info posted here and take small steps toward creating a joomla website.
I've already played around with Joomla on my pc (running xampp), but still consider myself a noob.
Lets start off by getting the right crowd into this thread. Do you have a Joomla site that you're using for e-commerce?
I'll post the more technical questions here later. Take care!

Hey Primax,
I have been using Joomla for a few years and I really like it. But only as a website platform.
I wouldn't recommend it for ecommerce. Why?
It's not really built for it. While you can get addons(extensions) such as virtuemart(free) you will end up learning two systems, Joomla & virtuemart.
I would like to suggest you check out Magento. They have a free version and a commercial version. it is a 100% ecommerce platform.

Re: Joomla and E-Commerce
aside from the joomla topic, what are general requirements for e-commerce?
I understand merchant accounts are needed etc etc... how does this all integrate?
lets say I build a website (using joomla for arguments sake). I install an e-commerce plugin. then I put up one product for sale.
what are the various things to look at? how do they integrate? how does the money eventually flow into an actual bank account, say a business checking account at a local bank?
would the plugin for instance require some input (say a merchant account number from oneshoppingcart.com or something) to make things work, etc.
thanks

Hi!
your ecommerce plugin, lets say virtuemart will have a a specific place for integrating payments such as paypal and or credit card. you will have to set it up.

i have set up a payment system on my wordpress and joomla account with only a verified account. though i guess there would be lot more options if you have a merchant account.

There are multiple payment gateways that you can use to recieve payments. Paypal shares the largest chunk of the market. You can open a business account with them to start receiving payments in your bank account.

I hate to say this, but Joomla probably isn't the best option for you if you plan on doing a lot of business. The original Magnetic Sponsoring community website was built on joomla 2 years ago, and by the time we reached 10,000 members, it came to a grinding halt.
We scrapped it and built out BN on Drupal instead and it's 10 times better.
