I was trying to find someone who is actively building their business on word of mouth. It’s not too big of a problem for me to approach a stranger and to introduce myself. I really want to use the 3 foot rule to build my business until I get better at using the internet and advertising to generate my own leads. I would love to hear and talk to someone who is having success with this and to learn some new ideas of what’s working for you?
I have been involved in two MLM companies and have always heard expose, expose, expose! But I have never found anyone that really applies to talking to everyone that comes within 3 feet. I heard of one person who would hand out 50 business cards a day but he was on a conference call and lived out in California. What is your advice on this? Is this the best way to promote your company?

Hi Jimmy
What you'll universally find on BN is that we are all students of the attraction marketing.
I could send you an affiliate link for Magnetic Sponsoring here - but I'll keep in integrity to demonstrate that this should be your next port of call.
Just go to: http://magneticsponsoring.com & sign up for the free info..and then buy Mike Dillard's book with the same name.
It's a real game-changer for anyone wanting to escape from the tyranny of the 3-foot rule.
Dez.

Hi Jimmy,
I can not answer this question for you but I am sure there are plenty of people here who can. i have never been comfortable talking business with someone I do not know.
The reason that I chose to respond to this post is because I think it is a bit presumptuous for Dez to presume that everyone here is a student of attraction marketing. I would hope that you wouldn't get the wrong impression and feel somewhat excluded by this.
The fact is that this is a big community with varying levels of expertise. The reason I love this place is that most people are very generous with their help and guidance. And yes, that is attraction marketing at its finest!
Good Luck Jimmy,
Cheryl
p.s. - For the record... I have yet to put a penny in Mike Dillard's pocket. Just saying

Re: Can I have some advice on recruiting?
I was on a conference call one evening and one of the leaders described how she approaches people when she's out. The only difference is she didn't go out to build her business...she built her business while she was out...you know what I mean?
One thing she said was that you need to express interest in the prospect, don't approach them and talk about yourself or your business. There is no getting around networking and building relationships with people.
Say she went to the mall to buy some shoes, the convo would go something like this:
you: so how long have you been working here? o ok...how do you like it?
them: it's ok
you: is this something that you are passionate about?
them: i mean...it pays the bills
you: well what is stopping you from doing what you are passionate about?
them: time...i don't have the time
you: I hear this story all the time...let me tell you what I do...i help people realize their dreams
My goal is to help 5 people a week and you might be one of those 5, if you're really serious about a change in your life. If I can show you how to make a full time income on a part time basis? work from home? get your time back? etc (say what their need is) is that something you would be interested in?
them: yes!
you: I'm committed to making your dreams come true. I want to help 5 people so they can help 5 more people. But I only work with people as committed as I am.
them: what do you do?
you: i have a business...but I don't tell everyone about it because its not always a good fit. What I do is mentor you and show you how to get where you want to be.
This is what I had in my notes...so of course you can finesse it a lot more, but you get the main points...find out what they are lacking first, let them talk about themselves first and then tell them that you can help them fill the need! Put more emphasis on you as a leader and mentor and not your business.
Also make sure the people that you are talking to are worth your time, because you can make more money but you can't get your time back! I hope this helps =)

Re: Can I have some advice on recruiting?

Hey Jimmy,
The "3 foot rule" in my experience is all about being authentic.
What do I mean by that? ...
For example, I'm standing in the grocery live the other day. (classic mlm example)
And the cashier was just miserable. Her allergies were killing her and she could barely do her job.
I took a genuine interest in talking to her. Come to find out she's "tried everything."
All the pills and syrups, shots, etc. Nothing has worked for her consistently.
In as brief a time as we had, I quickly shared a little bit about my battle with allergies and the solution I found ... our flagship product Body Balance.
I barely got around to finishing my story when "she" asked me how to get some.
I explained quickly how she could get a free 15 day trial, gave her a card and told her to call me.
Funny thing is, the lady behind us (a young mother with 2 kids - one that was sniffling like crazy) was obviously listening in on the conversation and asked me for a card too as I was gathering my groceries.
And that was that.
The point is, in my experience at least, is that the whole process is most effective when it's not forced.
Learning to genuinely take an interest in the people around you and talking "with them," not "at them" is such a crucial skill to develop.
I know that sounds weird .... develop the skill of talking to people. But it's true.
For some reason as soon as we come into the industry of "selling and marketing" we suddenly forget how to talk to people like a normal human being; just like we would strike up a casual conversation any other time without an "agenda."
And therein lies the secret I guess ... talk with people without an agenda.
I've had plenty of conversations where I never inserted language to get them interested in my business.
Either it just didn't go there OR I didn't want it to.
And that's another point to take note of ... posture.
Quite frankly you don't want "everyone" in your business and you certainly don't want to present yourself as though you do. When your version of "3foot rule" brands you as "desperate" that's a bad thing.
You want the 3foot rule to brand you as a confident entrepreneur
with something valuable to share with your community.
That's my best advice for you.
Hope it helps.
~bravo
PS:
Hey one more thing Jimmy ...
Something else I've learned is that when someone is ready
to buy your product or service - SELL IT TO THEM!
I've made the mistake so many times when someone had expressed an interest to "buy" and I switched into recruiting mode and blew them out of the water, lost the sale and went home empty handed.
So save the "business builder" jargon for practicing in front of the mirror.
Never ever neglect building a customer base.
Quite frankly it has been the glue in our organization for the last 7 years.
ok then, there it is.
Cheers!

Re: Can I have some advice on recruiting?
Hello Jimmy,
This is an opproach that I like to use, and the reason is because it can easily tell me whether the person is a potential customer, business lead or not at all interested. It's called F.O.R.M.
When I talk to someone the conversation is me getting to know them and what they are looking for. So I will ask questions about:
F - Family - Where they are from, do they have any kids, married, do they visit their family regularly.
O - Occupation - What do they do, do they like it, what about previous jobs, what do they want to do.
R - Recreation - What do they like to do for fun, do they get to do much, why or why not.
M - Message - What is the message are you getting from this person? Are they looking for a better life, are they looking for better health (great if you sell vitamins), What about more time. This is where you can easily see how to approach this person. The way a person talks can tell you exactly what they want out of life.
The key thing here is you have to be GENUINELY interested in them. Remember to add things and make it your own. I like to write all of my questions down. I have this on a list and I am always adding to it.
I hope this helps.
Take care Jimmy.

Re: Can I have some advice on recruiting?
Jim, attraction marketing is the best way to have people chasing you. There is way less effort in positioning yourself as an expert than constanly pushing your opportunity on everyone you walk by. Start by giving away some of your killer knowledge or techniques that you have gained in your experience. Then offer to help them understand and get on the same page as you for free. Once you have the trust of the person that you are teaching, and they see that you are someone that can help them get what they want, they will ask you about your opportunity and sell themselves.
