I know that this poem is not really relevant on this site but I liked it. If you don't like poetry then don't read it....
Grant at Ft. Donelson demanded unconditional and immediate surrender. At Appomattox he offered as lenient terms as a victor ever extended to the vanquished. Why the difference? The first event was at the beginning of the war, when the enemy's morale must be shaken. The other was at the end of the conflict, when a brave and noble adversary had been rendered helpless. In his quiet way Grant showed himself one of nature's gentlemen. He also taught a great lesson. No honor can be too great for a man, be he even our foe, who has steadily and uncomplainingly done his very best--and has failed.
HOW DID YOU DIE?
Did you tackle that trouble that came your way
With a resolute heart and cheerful?
Or hide your face from the light of day
With a craven soul and fearful?
Oh, a trouble's a ton, or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it,
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only how did you take it?
You are beaten to earth? Well, well, what's that!
Come up with a smiling face.
It's nothing against you to fall down flat,
But to lie there--that's disgrace.
The harder you're thrown, why the higher you bounce
Be proud of your blackened eye!
It isn't the fact that you're licked that counts;
It's how did you fight--and why?
And though you be done to the death, what then?
If you battled the best you could,
If you played your part in the world of men,
Why, the Critic will call it good.
Death comes with a crawl, or comes with a pounce,
And whether he's slow or spry,
It isn't the fact that you're dead that counts,
But only how did you die?
Edmund Vance Cooke.

I, for one, believe it IS appropriate to post this here, it has a good message, it makes you think and that's what I'm here for! Sometimes learning means you have to look at yourself, question yourself and find ways to improve yourself according to what you find!
Thanks for the post!

Re: How Did You Die?
Jim.Hi!
Your poem remind me something that really happen...
Once upon a time a very...yes...very smart guy...found out the way to remove tons of rocks in a single
minute...This gentleman was Nobel...he discovered DYNAMITE...but wait a minute...people start referring about him in a way... not very nice... indeed!
People call him "the guy who invented a very lethal weapon that kills lots of humans in a snap of a finger"
He became depressed...he was very...yes...very disappointed...but all of sudden he brought up a very clever idea...what was it?
He devoted part of his fortune to the 'PEACE NOBEL PRIZE"...and up until now every year someone
earn a monetary prize for his/her effort to promote peace in the world.
This gentleman Nobel was worry about how people would remember him after he passed away.
My question... is: How in the world people will remember us when we passed away?
Like a teacher that just did teach some good things?
Or maybe
Like a teacher that motivated some people in his/her life time?
Or maybe
Like a teacher THAT REALLY INSPIRED LOTS OF PEOPLE TO REACH THEIRS BEST POTENTIAL?
I am planning to be the latter.
Be well,
Roger Aburto

Bravo! That was inspiring and thoughtful. I shall remember it. I am also inspired by the movie 'Batman' when Batman was captured by the Riddler and the Joker. The Joker said to the Riddler, 'Don't kill him, or he won't learn nothing.'

Jim, I happen to think it's very relevant. Some good learning in there, and not just for folks in this forum.
Thanks for posting it.

Great post. Thanks for sharing it. Loved the poem, and the info about Grant. Didn't know either.

Jim,
Loved the poem! I'm a fan of poetry anyway
I think it is very appropriate to post here because it's relevant to what we do. Who are we? What do we stand for? Would we fight for what we believe in? ... You bet I would!
