I think many are missing the point of the discussion from the beginning with Contemp. So I'll do my best to address it. Major Brand Companys that are Nationwide have "Authority" & "Trust" in their industry overall, so they rank well just on those two factors alone in most cases.
Plus major brands have big marketing budgets and usually do 100's of thousands of dollars in PPC alone not including SEO, and traffic is a big factor in ranking as well. Yes, you heard right, the amount of traffic a site is getting, turns into activity, and if the pages are sticky enough, that is a huge plus for them as well, because the major SE's are crawling the big brands site pages a lot more. If the national brand is providing fresh content all the time, that's another big plus because the SE's are there crawling their pages even more to see where they should rank.
Contemp said that MIDAS ranks well nationally, but not locally!? Not sure exactly what you mean Contemp? You mean locally for each city they have a physical store in nationwide, or locally where thier main offices are, not sure!?
Anyway, if they are not ranking well in their local marketplaces where each of their stores are, they need to focus on Local SEO for each location they are trying to get ranking for. Yes, local SEO is a specialized field and there are many things that need to be done to rank well locally too.
E.G. Make sure there is a google places for each office in it's city, be listed in all the major local online directories, and optimize for google maps. Having seperate PPC campaigns for each MIDAS office nationwide that have the local city and state in the the keyword terms. This is the jist of it, and again, local SEO is a specialty in itself, and should not be overlooked by National or local brick and mortar businesses especially.
