Hi Jared and Jacob. Unfortunately most people who start don't have "knowledge" so that's where the "fake it till you make it" comes in.

I like to take someone very new, direct them to just one thing that they can learn and impliment and then tell them to write or record what they've learned. Then go on to learn something else, write or record and repeat. Writing about, telling others this is what they've learned today, this is how it worked or isn't working and then move onto the next thing. What a following they build! Never once pretending to know more than what they do. Just allowing other people in on their journey to success.

The honesty will improve knowledge, honesty builds relationships.

I think there is one more thing. You actually need to have knowledge. People are attracted to leaders. You can only be a leader if you have something others don't have which is usually mlm knowledge.

I hear you Stephen. I was talking to someone the other day who admitted they paid $15,000, yes, that's fifteen thousand dollars, and lost the whole amount ! Personally I enjoyed Frank Kern's State of Internet Address. Maybe because he's talking the sale language I am: THE DISCONNECT BETWEEN MARKETING AND SALES.

When did that happen? When did selling become such a dirty word? It was already there when I came online and I actually bought into the philosophy that you build your business online like that.

Took a good hard look at what I was doing and wished someone would have hit me with a two by four back then. What a wandering path I took.

Actions speak louder than words. Although initially words can deceive. I've been known to follow people because of what they say and how they position themselves in forums and such places. As time goes by I've learned to be a little more cautious. I have made incorrect decisions, even some recently, based on a persons public profile but the truth always comes out. It's usually when promises made do not happen that a persons intent is seen.

One thing I get a kick out of is watching people follow internet guru's. Recently Frank Kern did a "State of the Internet" speech. I was amazed at the people who listened to him as if he was doing anything other than marketing. What people don't seem to realize is these Guru's are marketers. Everything they say and do is aimed at building their list and making a sale. They are good ones to follow and model because they know their business and you can learn a lot about marketing from them. Buying into their hype is something I don't suggest.

After a while you learn who to follow and who not to. People like Mike Dillard, the MLSP founders and others bring true value. While others hype one program after another. I always choose to follow value and ignore the hype. Although sometimes it takes a little time to distinguish the difference.

You have to, MUST HAVE, 3 foundamental principles at the very core of your being:

HONESTY

INTEGRITY

AUTHENTICITY

You can say you are honest, have integrity and are authentic as much as you want, (and some will follow you) but eventually you will be caught out. The really stupid ones will continue to follow you (and defend you) but the others will leave no matter how many times you posture yourself as a great leader.
