Posting great content is a good way to sell your product, though some people prefer to use their blogs to offer information related to their product or service, and not the product or service itself. If you can reel in your online visitors with your articles or blogs, converting them into consumers will be easy enough.

Hi Jim:

With blogging for business, sales are made at the backend (via your list) while the front end (blog front) is purely a platform for giving away free value (via useful contents) to your prospective customers.

Sales via blogging are relationship-led. The business (and monetization) model of a blog is simiar to a newspaper or magazine - lots of news-worthy contents but the money comes from the ads within - and readers are not compelled to buy.

Here are 4 ways you can sell via blogging:

1.) Continually build a list and build a relationship with them. Place an opt-in form on your sidebar, and at the end of your posts so that readers who like your posts can subscribe, and you can email them some more useful contents, to build a relationship with them until they like and trust you enough to buy from you.

80:20 Rule here - Email them 80% of the time with pure useful content, and 20% of the time with useful content PLUS a note or recommendation about a useful product/ service.

2.) Product reviews. Write honest reviews of quality products that you have used and found very useful or that you believe will be of immense benefit to them.

3.) Recommended Resources Page/ Tab. Create a page on your blog where you list a rolodex of useful, best resources you have used or know are must-have for people in your niche.

4.) A few small banners on the sidebar, of some products. Ensure not to cluster the sidebar with ad so that it does not look like an eShop. This is a model like the malls that place items on stands - a reader may click to know more if the content behind a sidebar banner catches their "fancy".

Notes:
-Be sure to only recommend the best products.
-Creative use of call to action when you write reviews or email a recommendation - no salesy undertones.

I hope you find these tips useful.

I would just like to say 'Thank you' for the comments regarding this topic. I must admit that I did not really agree with some of them but then I guess thats the way that it usually is.
I think that the main point that kinda stuck out was this 'making friends first' approach. It seemed at times that the people making this type of approach are almost ashamed of what they are promoting, lets face it either you have approached them or they have approached you...for what purpose? I wanted a power drill last weekend so I went to HomeDepot and bought one, I did not want to make friends there it was purely a business transaction. Nothing else.
When I read a persons Blog I find that I treat it exactly the same as I would a magazine or a newspaper, I scan it. If there is something there that catchs my eye I read it, if there is something there that I object to I move on, I think that most people read the same way.
Of course trust and loyalty are important but I do not think that they can be established by reading a few blog posts I believe that a person should declare what they do and the reason for the connection at the beginning of the relationship, anything short of that borders on acting in a rather underhand manner. In closing I did actually have somebody from on here phone me up a short while ago, in the beginning they were very nice and friendly but when it became obvious to them that I was not interested their attitude changed and they became rather nasty. Of course I appreciate that that is just one example but hardly a stand alone incident.
How many other people has that person contacted with the same sneaky 'I am your friend and I just want to help you' approach? anyway thanks again for your input I expect that as usual there is no 'truth' just different opinions, all the best, regards Jim T.

[quote="Nemo"]Hi, I am new to using a blog site for selling purposes and my question is this, do you use your blog page to sell from directly? in other words do you put items for sale in the content area of the blog or just in the sidebar? (because if you put it in the content area surely it is going to dissapear when you write the next article isn't it?) ....also do you use the 'pages' to sell from as well?

Hi Jim,

I see that you mentioned specifically, "using your blog page to sell from directly? In other words do you put
items for sale in the content area of the blog or just in the sidebar?"

In regard to selling products, you can set up part of your blog as a store. I'm not sure what type of products you are referring to-- but there is a plugin available from Wordpress: the w-p-ecommerce plugin that you can use to set up an actual store with a shopping cart, product lists and so forth on a WP blog.

I have just posted this article about that on BetterNetworker: http://bit.ly/dKUUMM

Hope this is helpful!

I try to use my articles to inform readers and never to advertise. Once they see the article, they can go to my website and continue to sign up on their own. No selling involved. No products are pushed on them to purchase. When making friends, you are just that, being a friend. Relate to them and give value to your relationships.

Thanks Richard for the in depth content. Could not have said better myself. Like Daniel also said, Branding is very important to letting your customers know who you are and what you are about and most importantly you want your customers to trust you before they will buy from you. So Brand Yourself.
" You, Inc. " It will last longer if you want any longevity in this business.

Look at Donald Trump for example. People around the world know his name but many have never met him. Wish you the best with your Blog. Read other people's Blogs too to get ideas and inspiration.

Here is the reply to your question. You tell stories because facts tell and stories sell.

I've been asked on several occasions "How Do You Do That?"
And it really is quite simple ... you have to engage and interact with your readers.
Ask them questions. Invite them to participate. And give them what they want.

Do that, and as your sites' popularity increases you'll see plenty of opportunities to monetize..

Here's a nugget worth it's weight in gold.

I totally agree. Build a relationship with your readers and they will be eating out of your hand ;)

Thanks Richard, for your words of wisdom!

I brand myself at the front end then I promote what I use and what I believe that works at the back end. Works every time.
