So, I'll just give my opinion of getting ranked in the SE's.
The key to SEO is doing proper keyword research. This is the foundation. And if you skimp on this part and you try to optimize your blog, articles, etc... for shabby keywords, you would have wasted a whole lot of time.
1. Know what your target audience is typing into the search engines. What are they looking for? What is their most pressing concerns on their minds?
2. After you got a list of potential keywords, check your competition in the search engines (se's). I start and end at Google since it's the biggest.
3. If you're doing a blog, you want to optimize it for your keywords. In the title, categories etc... Don't make it spammy but use words that are Interchangeable. For example don't always say MLM, use network marketing. Understand
latent semantic indexing. Seo Book has good SEO training...get the free tutorials if they still offer them.
4. If you're doing web 2.0 content, like Squidoos and Hubpages, etc... Make sure you use your keywords in the title. Always tag your content on this sites with 5-6 keywords. Each tag represents a backlink to your content. And some tag pages for some of these web 2.0 sites rank well in the SE's.
5. The last step is to get backlinks that link to your blog and other web 2.0 properties with the anchor text(s) you want to rank for. You can also get backlinks the categories on your blog. Getting backlinks, quality backlinks is the way your content is going to move up in the search engines.
