Here is what I have learned by owning one of the largest social communities (of its kind) in Canada.

~ Traffic is king and content draws the traffic in
~ Original content outweighs copy/paste everytime
~ Find your keywords and stick to them, when new trends pop up add them then take them off as the trend relaxes
~ DO NOT BUY LINKS EVER, There is no such thing as a quick link builder that is beneficial and it will hurt your efforts.
~ Recruit people to help you get the word out about your site - link building is tedious
~ Participate when you can but let the organics of your site take off and dont overpost comments, discussion threads brings return visitors
~ Pay attention to Alexa ratings and PR - a good tool is push2check.com
~ Be very catious with link trading, poor content/ranked sites will hurt your rating

And most above all - give it time, it will not happen overnight and take pride in seeing your rankings improve. Don't forget there are millions of other sites trying to do the exact same thing you are doing.

100 days STRAIGHT of writing good content! and of course some keyword strategies. But it mostly has to do with being CONSISTENT for 100 days. if you can write ONE article PER DAY for 100 days, you will start ranking on the front page. Question is: who will be CONSISTENT for 100 days?
(clue: most people won't write 20 straight articles!!)
