Hey guys (and preferably Contempo)..

I was going to start building my first link wheel when a friend told me that they don't work very well anymore.. She said that you can still do it but don't make the outer ring completely connect up and leave gaps in it - so to speak - so that it's not so obvious.

Firstly is this true?

And if this is true now, what backlinking strategies are people doing? Does anyone know any good diagrams out there??

My original plan was to create a link wheel, and then submit every single site in the wheel through TribePro (automatically syndicates out to social bookmarking/networking sites)..

Depends on who you ask and which model you are using.

The classic model of a "link wheel" is largely ineffective.
Reason being is footprint.

Like breadcrumbs on a trail, the footprint left by the traditional link wheel model has been identified and can raise flags for search engines, thus affecting your results. This is true in just about any blatant manipulation of search results etc. If the model is too loose, it will most certainly leave a footprint.

There are models that work that require a little more effort and planning, but are effective.
For example...

A "link wheel" type of structure with more organic linking applied to a buffer, such as a web2.0 property like HupPages, Scribd, Blogger, Posterous, etc. Then using that buffer to link to your target zone, is more effective today with less direct risk to the target zone.

Does that make sense?

yes, the key to back linking is to make it look natural. Google is smart and is not fooled for long.

My biggest success has been Profile backlinks (winsons backlinks)

Article backlinks as well.

Social bookmarking to get my page indexed.

And tonnes of Tweets, Diggs, Google +1's, this adds social proof. Whenever I need a page to bump up a few spots, I'll load up on these.
