I just watched Ferny Ceballos's video on how to get backlinks by commenting on other high authority sites and I am kind of confused.
Here's a link to that video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLyFL-x_ ... re=channel
In that video he suggested using a keyword in the "Name" field. Now since we have a "URL" field, the keyword becomes an anchor text pointing towards our site.
Well sounds good, but is it ok to do that?
Will our comments get approved?
Does using our real name in the "Name" field and using the "URL" field to link back to our content piece have any benefits?
I would love to hear out different opinions regarding this.
P.S - By the way, it really doesn't matter right if the links are do-follow or no-follow, right?

Re: Blog Commenting For Getting Backlinks - Name Or Keyword
Hey, Jagan:
Ideally, putting your keyword in the name field is great and yes, that's the best way to get links from commenting.
Problems: you are right, your comments might not be approved, especially on bigger blogs.
Here's is my theory on how comments end up in spam: your name is too long (which is very easy to do when you are using keywords); you use URL of an inner page in your blog (which is usually longer. On the other hand, you are much better off pointing links to your inner page, rather than your home page); you add an additional link in your comment.
Now again, it's a theory, but once your comment ends up in spam, not everybody will bother checking for valid comments before they empty their spam folder.
Your best bet are blogs that use KeywordLuv plugin in comments; that allows you to use both your name and your keyword in the name field, but only your keyword will become hyperlinked, like on my blog http://www.trafficgenerationcafe.com.

Re: Blog Commenting For Getting Backlinks - Name Or Keyword
More and more blog owners are becoming familiar with comment spam.
If you want to get link juice, just get traffic to a single page on your site (ie. the about us page) and use your real name in the "name" field of the comment. On that page of your blog, use links within the content to pass the strength to other pages/posts on your website. This will increase your chances of the owner accepting your comment.
You can sculpt PR (page rank) using this strategy. Just focus on ranking a small set of keywords and continue to push more power to that single page on your site. If you have tons of keywords that you'd like to have rank, you can apply this strategy across multiple sites.

If you want to to get backlinks from commenting while using your keywords for the name field, your best bet is to find blogs that auto approve comments. These are generally much lower quality but when it comes to your backlink portfolio, variation is always key anyway.

Re: Blog Commenting For Getting Backlinks - Name Or Keyword
I use blog commenting for generating links for my Social Media profiles. Such as my Twitter and Facebook profiles. Which I will use my full name for the anchor text.
The reason I do this is because I have tried the keyword commenting, I went pretty hard with it, and I found most of my comments were not ever approved. So all of my efforts were lost. So I rank my social media profiles instead.
I use article marketing for my actual keyword anchor text. Then I know, my keyword will be approved.

Re: Blog Commenting For Getting Backlinks - Name Or Keyword
You can sometimes do an inbetween if your keyword could sound like part of your name or hypen the keyword and your name, or alot of blogs used things like commentluv to show the last post and then your name as well. I think there are less and less dofollow blogs around now and even less that allow keywords. Google now place less weight on blog comments than they used to.

While blog commenting may not be as strong as contextual links from a high PR blog...they do count and they are easy to create for most people.
With that being said, if you want more power from blog comments, backlink your comments.

Re: Blog Commenting For Getting Backlinks - Name Or Keyword
I am not a fan of blog commenting and never will. These links are of low quality as there a a lot of comments in every page and this would cost the quality of the links going to your site. Another thing is that the owner of the blog needs to approve your comment before it is to be published. This would take time and once an owner likes to play with your account, he will report it to Akismet as a spam and you're gone.
In fact, you need thousands of blog comments before it would have bearing in the ranking. Look at those on top of the SERP, they have a lot of thousands of links and most of them come from blog comments. I am just too lazy to make those thousands of blog comments when I can do an equivalent of few blog postings.

@ eimroda - I agree with blog comments not being strong, but you don't need thousands to rank. I have several blogs that have used blog commenting exclusively (no other traffic tactics besides on-page SEO) and they rank well with thousands of unique visitors a month. They're only PR 1-2's...and these are for medium tail keywords.
@Richard - for blog comments, asking the owner is too much of a hassle...I say that after doing 1000's of blog comments. For guest blogging or other in-content links, that's a different story.

Re: Blog Commenting For Getting Backlinks - Name Or Keyword
Hi Jagan,
While, i did that video a while ago! There's actually some cool stuff we'll be teaching about Blog Commenting in our Traffic Cipher course, but here's an update to the "ancient" video you found.
Yes, ideally keyword as your name would be great, but getting approved will be hard.
Instead, use your name, get the link and point it to your money site homepage. Focus on building the authority of your homepage and domain with blog commenting. As the authority of your site goes up, ranking for other keywords with sub pages is much easier.
An obvious example of this is Ezine Articles or even BetterNetworker. Your articles get good rankings pretty quickly for mid-level competition keywords, because of the authority of the domain.
Cheers!
