It is all about your article/content getting indexed first. Google will give the authority to the originator of the content.

That is the general idea at least...

On the other hand, I have a twitter account that is 100% fed by and rss from google alerts and it has a google page rank of 3 so go figure. That is plainly duplicate content and my ratings continue to rise.

So I really can't be sure either. Take it for what it is worth.

Google is a complex monster!

This is a fantastic post. Thanks Dave for getting it going.

And you guys are right on target. I recently got my Google account reinstated, even though I market affiliate products and everyone told me it couldn't be done. But I was able to show Google that I provide unique, creative content regarding the products I market, and do it in a transparent way.

No tricks, no redirections... just giving the user what they asked for. They're happy, Google is happy, and I am happy.

I believe that Google doesn't have a problem if you sell affiliate products. Their problem is when you use a website that is exactly the same as many others in the same company. And I understand why they would take issue with this.

I'm with you, Bob.

The main thing I was after when I started this thread was to point out
what I saw as a mistake that lots of people were making.
It seems to me that many marketers believe that if they post an
article on their blog and then post the same article on an article directory that
this would somehow be a bad thing for them, especially as far as Google PPC goes.

I'm sure there are lots of different thoughts on this subject, but I just don't think
that posting an article in several different places is a bad thing when considering the big picture. :)

I agree with Mike. Less than %.05 of my traffic comes from search engines. Through other free methods of promotion my sites have had millions of visitors. Without any effort on my part, my sites get 100s of search engine visitors a day.
