Everything you needed to know about setting up a Blog

Postby Ged Duff on Fri Jan 06, 2012 11:12 am

Ever thought about telling people about yourself, your hobbies, your family. If it's personal or not you may find the following advice interesting and informative.

Have a look at the following two websites; blogger.com and wordpress.com. These two sites belong to Google and Microsoft and are a good base to start your blogging. They are both free to set up and have very good graphics, templates to organize your site as you wish, you can administer the site yourself and can also allow others to become authors and post/create messages themselves. Anyone can make comments but you can manage the messages posted. It will take a short length of time before you master the setting up of pages and additional information running alongside the main comments and text within the pages. Your home page will be the main area that people can comment or post text. If you only wish to have a basic blog such as a family blog about you and your close ones, it can include, your pets and your holidays, photo's and any special occasions, it is basically a record of your life and what you get up to.

You can if you want put advertisements on your blog, this can be done in two ways, free and paid. You can advertise anything, there is no limit to this, if you want people to know about something that is important to you and others. You can have the adverts running alongside a related subject but you can also set up a full page if you want. Try getting in touch with businesses in your local area, when your site becomes more popular you can ask for payment from the business. The business itself will want to have space and go out to a local area or even the world. You could try Google AdSense which will automate similar ads into your blog pages, when someone clicks onto a particular ad you will make money, sometimes 50p per click is possible and this will help finance your blog.

You can market your blog by opening accounts on Facebook and Twitter, whenever you e-mail someone include your web address at the end next to your name. You can also add your address to online directories which will scan your site for inclusion.

Hi Ged. Excellent advice and I'm still wondering about the adviseability of introducing someone to a free blog which they don't own. It's so cheap to own your own site that it's just a given that someone who is looking at starting a business will buy a domain name, a hosting platform and then set up wordpress.org.

Do people realize that a free web site can be shut down by an outside source for reasons you can never find out?

Yes, I agree Joyce.

Especially since this is a business forum. Why do all the work to create all the great content for a blog, and then not own it?

If it is just a personal blog, fine. But even then, it would be sad if that venue closed down and then you lose access to all the information you generated.

Thanks for the advice and yes its true I do understand of course, why would you want to start a blog that is owned by someone else. My main aim for the advice was to 'have a go first' and practice your skills, I was thinking better to try and do a blog yourself, you can still achieve either a business or personal blog using Google or Microsoft but yes I do get your point. :)

Thanks Ged for taking the time to write this post. I agree with Betsy and Joyce on the fact that a business blog hosted on a platform like blogspot or wordpress is not necessarily the best thing to do.

Additionally when considering the amount of work that could be done for search engine optimization alone, it seems better to host the site on a paid hosting on which you have more control. Plus, it could be done rather fast.
