This subject was new to me when I ran across it today.
I thought I would post about it for other that may not be aware of it.
This is an SEO issue that is affecting the internal links in your pages from one to the other. It causes keyword relevance to be lost or reduced if you get it wrong.
It is easy to fix once you can see it so check out this well done video on a blog I follow that describes both the problem and the solution.
There is no commercial purpose in this link just education so if you are interested watch the video and then you can check your own sites and fix the problems you find there. This usually affects the ability of your HOME page to rank well for its keywords.

Re: Have you heard of "First Link Priority"
The idea is rather old, but non conforming to the new Google Panda Algo Update. Do we really want an image as an indicator for a click through ? This totally goes against the common practice of LINKING and traffic sculpting, why ? Well many surfing the net will not look at an image as an indicator to click, furthermore if they do click it is under the presumption that the IMAGE is linking to a LARGER image...e.g auto sites.
Anchor text linking is still part of SEO BEST PRACTICES. The idea at one point several years back was novel, but I fear this is just some guru re-hashing a concept to further confuse the novice and ignorant, ultimately establishing authority, as for many just like you, LINK PRIORITY is a new concept...NOT REALLY
Does Google value images on websites ? SURE, are they great traffic generators ? DO I KNOW LOL, I recently posted pics on my 17sleeve.com news blog with leaked PHOTOS from the latest Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn. The result, 4 server crashes in 1 day...over 1.2 million page views, and 650K visitors. Traffic was great, but the real traffic driver was not the post itself, it was the image that was showing on GOOGLE'S IMAGE RESULTS... leading me to suggest the following...
Optimize an image - DO NOT LINK AN IMAGE.
Do use Alt Tag on image
Do use Image Description
Do add image caption.
Anchor text is still king, whats more ? There is no single metrics to OPTIMIZING A PAGE. sure implementing this metric alone will offer no value.
According to Matt Cutt's Google uses over 20,000 signals and metrics...one being ... and get this (PAGE LOAD TIME) many don't think about this, but it does make so much sense.
Imagine if I am Google, and I am in the business of offering the most relevant search results to my users, Would I want to index a site with EXCELLENT MATERIAL that takes 30 seconds to load, or Would I take a slightly lesser grade of a site but takes only 1 second to load....
I have been working on Google's Algo since the Google Panda Update, and it's by no surprise that LARGE sites, who could be considered content farms, like TMZ or Huffington Post, will still do better than smaller sites in the long run because of their LOAD TIME....now this again just like LINK PRIORITY is not the solve all to first page presence but among all the signals, Google Evaluates...
Can someone tell me why there is such a love affair with linking ? how about content ? yes the world needs content, and it is by no surprise that this site (Better Networker) ranks in the top 5000 sites in the world, with a page rank (5) it's not because of the so called marketing methods talked about so ignorantly in the forums and blogs across the net, but because we are all HERE BUILDING IT's CONTENT, from video submission, to article submission, to forum building. Google loves this stuff, because in the END WE ARE ALL WRITING CONTENT...BetterNetworker.com ranks..CONTENT IS KING ... PERIOD...
ESPECIALLY AFTER THE GOOGLE PANDA UPDATE

Contempo,
Thanks for the deep insights I am glad you stepped in and added that perspective.
I am well aware that there are many factors that affect page rank and search rank of course but I do not follow the details of the latest google updates.
I am glad you shared these points.
