Well, I'm sure many folks suspected this, but it's now been confirmed through a real scientific study, the top 3 spots on the Google organic search are over 2 times more valuable than the paid listings on Adwords in 3 areas:

1) Visibility
2) Traffic
3) Conversion (Trust)

You're right, even if the whole #10 spot theory is true, it still wouldn't make any sense shooting for that.

Depending on your search history, location, and time of day you search, search results may vary for different users by 1, 2, 3 or even 5 spots up or down.

The groups who talked about this "coveted #10" spot, were more concerned with teaching you cool tidbits of information to engage you, but that info didn't really amount to anything you could implement.

Common sense has always said that the best spots are the top spots and this study confirms it.
