I'm talking from my own ignorace, so I might be wrong.

Having said that, this is what I think:

More than a precise number, I think what would be suspicious is to have a spike of back links out of nowhere, especially if they're not "natural" (all with the same text, same alt, same target...).

Let's say you run a newspaper site like the NY Times. I would be OK and normal for Google to find everyday hundreds or even thousands of new links to the site. It goes with the trend for that site. It's like: OK, I found 935 new links to 60 pages in that domain today, yesterday 1035 to 83 pages, the day before 863 to 101 pages, so it's normal.

But then, you have the regular blogger with his blog, putting comments on other blogs, so google finds 3 - 10 new links a day, and then one day it starts finding 300!! I think that would be the problem. It's an anomaly, it doesn't correlate with the trend in backlinks, the traffic that the blog is getting. Just out of nowhere start appearing 300 links a day, all with the same anchor text, to the same page in the blog. It's no brainer that there's something wrong.

Some people think that the link velocity is a factor of SEO. If you create large amount of links during short period, you will get larger impact on your page ranking than do the same work during a long period of time.

Lately I've been doing a lot of blog commenting. My aim is to do about 10 blog comments a day. I only comment on blogs that get a significant amount of traffic. I'll usually leave a comment,then ping it by going to pingdevice.com. Then I bookmark it by going to delicious, then tweet the post as well. I keep all my blog comment URL's in a file. Then I go to linkilicous.me to get them indexed. There's also another tool called backlinkenergizer that does a better job of getting your links indexed and counted, but it will set you back about $40. To answer your question, I really don't know, because it depends on if your site has some authority or not, if you just bought your domain yesterday then your site has no authority and google doesn't true you. So if you were to shoot thousands of crappy backlinks at your site then that would raise a red flag and you could get penalized.

haha the Google slap for too many backlinks..

I'm calling: myth.

My site gets about 25,000 unique search engine visitors a month and I literally get THOUSANDS of backlinks daily.

People think their site gets hurt because it drops down a spot or two.

But actually this isn't Google penalizing a website, this is Google removing some of your spam backlinks from it's index, which makes you fall in the rankings.

If you get more spam backlinks, you can move right back up. (not saying to spam the net or anything )

But don't worry about too many backlinks, unless a site is like a week old. After a site hits 2 or 3 months, you can get as many as you want and the traffic will come.

Keep this between us though, it's better if the world believes too many backlinks will get their site sandboxed.

In just one week, its has increased my blogs traffic and it has been showing up on google more frequently.

There is no perfect specifications or requirements there in building the backlinks but according to the latest Google ranking update (penguin), it's better not to do over optimization by building unnatural links. Try to keep them natural by building the natural looking links. You can do it by combining the link building with the following methods:

Build do-follow links and also no-follow links at least for 35% (in total of do-follow's)
Build links directly (without anchor texts/keywords)
Do social media posting (Facebook, linkedin, twitter, Google+ etc)
