I think I've only received a couple and I can only vaguely remember them as I didn't even listen to it and immediately deleted.
The ridiculous thing about them is that you can clearly tell its a recorded message and not necessarily a "human"!
I can't understand why it works but it obviously does for some people otherwise they wouldn't do it.

Re: Automated telemarketing campaigns
Okay, I confess! GUILTY AS CHARGED!!
I recently contracted with a voice broadcasting service as a test. The idea was to call 10,000 real estate professionals and drop a short 45-second script on their voice mail asking if they kept their options open to earn additional income outside of what they were currently doing in real estate. If so, they were given a web site address to visit for more information. The site required an opt-in.
Result? ONLY FIVE OPT-INS and ZERO actions taken from that point.
Second test. 4,000 short 30-second voice mail messages left for to a "9 Question Business Opportunity Seeker Opt-in" list. Same deal. Website address if interested. Press #2 to be placed on a do-not-call list.
Result? ONLY THREE took any form of action.
Now... that said, had the test produced at least a break-even result, I would have continued because it is just another way to "sift and sort" to find those you are looking for more now. It's not meant to build a relationship or make presentation. If is meant to simply direct those who MIGHT be interested to learn more. But, alas... pretty much a dud in regards to results.

I hang up when I get them.
What you could do is use them as a relationship building tool. My friends doctor uses them and sends out a voice blast on some sort of health tip. We could do the same thing send out tips.

Re: Automated telemarketing campaigns
Marie,
I concur. Automated phone messages are a nuisance at best. They serve exactly the opposite of the intended objective- they repel. I would never buy anything from someone who forces me to be charged for a call even if the product is great. And this is also invasion of privacy. And spam too!
People who use this service are not really marketers at all. Because marketing is all about attraction and good sense- not forcing stuff down the throats of targets. Good marketing is about establishing and nurturing relationships, gradual and gentle courtship and finally letting the customer choose. Nothing else works.
