Its never a bad idea to prototype ideas. I would start with a free site until I gathered enough knowledge to make an informed decisions.
Good luck I understand Blogs can be quite productive.

Re: Blog thoughts
i'm with you on making things look good. personally i'd rather wait to put something up until i am comfortable with the look and feel, then start putting up the content.
but i'm not in a position where i need to generate income from a blog or new site in a hurry, so i can't say that is the best approach for everyone. if you're needing results as quick as possible i'd go ahead and get something live and get your content flowing so you can start generating leads and hopefully some monetary return on your time and energy investment.
as you get your content out, you can be developing the look and feel more on your own, and then release it as an update to your site as opposed to waiting until it is all "perfect" before going live. current subscribers will be happy to see a fresh design and will be impressed with the improvements, and it can help to give you a bit of extra credibility to newcomers as they may feel like you've been around a bit longer and already have a crowd to please and you're pleasing them.
i've got a few projects that have been on hold for ages because i am never fully satisfied with the design and everything. but i'm a perfectionist in some ways like that. others i just force myself to push live and deal with the imperfections later. guess it depends quite a bit on what your situation is and what your needs are.
take care,
jM

Alex,
What matters is who comes to read your blog and who they recommend. Ever gone into a shabby looking restaurant, had a great meal with fabulous service and shared the experience with everyone you knew? Same principle.

Hey Alex,
Hope all is well with you and Yours for the Holidays
It does not have to be the greatest Looking Blog, but you do have to have real content that will keep your readers there and wanting to come back for more... Then once you have that, how are you going to get people there to see it... If you search this forum I am sure you will find several Methods on How to Do that...
I wish you the Best of Luck

Re: Blog thoughts
Being a perfectionist is fine Alex, if you have the time. Unfortunately, I've found that perfection doesn't exist. (or is that just me?)
As long as you make a start, you can always change and update as you go along.
Having said that, I have to agree with Dean. It's much better if you start out on your own domain. Why set up home in one place and then move house? You will no doubt be getting your own domain in the future, so why waste time and money and energy on doing up something that you are going to leave behind to start all over again?

Re: Blog thoughts
I also think design and content are important that is why I use typepad instead of blogger. Yes it costs but it's not that much and they have more flexibility and designs and you get traffic stats which you do not get with blogger.

Great comments as usual, personaly, I posted a piece Blaag! Blaag! Blaag! If the purpose of a blog is to "Attract" people, Rule one: short is best, Rule 2: neat and clean. As mentioned above you can always go back and tweak it!! Its a "BLOG" not a Web Site or a novel!
