Does your business share traits with a pro football team?

Postby Daniel Herzner on Mon Dec 01, 2008 1:48 pm

In the world of professional football, the New York Giants are off to an 11 – 1 start; their best in franchise history. Why is this significant? Why even bring this up? Well, there are some very, VERY significant lessons to be learned from this.

Before the season started the Giants lost one of their team captains and future hall of fame defensive end, Michael Strahan and they’re 11-1. In a meaningless pre-season game they lost their only 2007 pro bowl player, Osi Umenyiora, for the entire season and they’re 11-1. They played two consecutive games recently – against two tough teams with winning records – without their top rusher, Brandon Jacobs, due to a knee injury and they’re 11-1. The wide out who caught the Super Bowl game winning touchdown, Plaxico Buress, has been plagued with injuries all season and has just surrendered to police on a concealed weapon charge (and most likely will never play for the Giants again) and they’re 11-1. It seems that no matter what is thrown their way; the New York Giants do nothing but win football games.

There is a big lesson here about life and business for all of us to understand. Winners find ways to win – losers beat themselves. Life will constantly throw adversity at you – virtually every single day – and how you handle that adversity will make you either a winner or a loser. When life gets difficult, the easy thing to do is blame circumstances for your blight – that’s what losers do. Winners, on the other hand, rise to the occasion. They understand that little can be done to control life’s ups and down yet everything can be done about how you react to those ups and downs.

Additionally, the New York Giants – obviously – are a team. They are successful because they have players on the team who can step in and pick up the slack without getting sidetracked by any of the swirling distractions. Success in your network marketing business is a team sport. You will only succeed by having the right players on your team. The people you network with, the professionals you retain and even the clients you service are all members of your team. Choose your teammates wisely, commit to yourself that you will not allow any outside circumstances to derail you from achieving your goals and your ultimate success will be inevitable.

You don’t have to be a sports fan to get the point being made here. You have to be a fan of success to get this point. Do you get it?
Struggles of today can evaporate tomorrow. Have faith -
pain relief is oh so close.

Great post and analogy!!! If I had to say what traits I shared with a pro football team then I wouldn't have to look much futher than the Oakland Raiders because I live in Oakland as well.

Their slogan "Commitment to Excellence" resonates with me and that's why I'm excited about the direction I'm moving in. Like the Raiders, it seems as though every time I turn around I'm being penalized for some mistake but I accept total responsibility.

I'm learning through those mistakes so I guess I'm "failing forward". In my opinion, Network Marketing will expose you for who you really are and I believe many people quit because they don't like what they're seeing so it becomes easier to point fingers.

Winners like the Giants stay focused and keep moving forward, that's the only direction they're pointing fingers at. Like the Raiders and others in Network Marketing I have struggled with DISCIPLINE.

All the raw talent and potential in the world isn't as effective as it could be if there is a lack of discipline. In the old school classic The Road Less Traveled, M. Scott Peck says this in the first chapter called what else, Discipline: "Discipline is the basic set of tools we require to solve life's problems. Without discipline we can solve nothing. With only some discipline we can solve only some problems. With total discipline we can solve all problems."

I'm accepting responsibility for where my business is and where it's headed and like the Oakland Raiders, I will know what it's like to be a champion. Of course they do have three Super Bowl rings... I'm in pursuit of a ring of my own, a ring my whole team can share and be proud of for the tireless work and focus we've commited to.

Continued Success!

It's not what happens to you but how you react to it that counts.

I played college football & Baseball, Arena Football. It takes hard work, and teamwork to be successful.

Of course in the Giants case it helps to have other stars in the backup roll to step up.

***Side Note*** Giants won't make it that far without Buress in the playoffs.
