My 2 bits in this whole thing.....
First, the craziness surrounding MD's unfollowing is simply a sad testament to the overall state of our society. Seriously, I would put $1000.00 cold hard cash on the table right now that not a single person who dissed Mike in their commentary actually even knows the guy or communicate with him on even a remotely intimate level. So why the hell do you care if he unfollowed you or anyone else? I mean really, what did you think.... Mike Dillard was secretly "following" your every move on Twitter? Seriously? I'm curious to hear what the answer would be from all these people. No really. Put your cards on the table and throw down!
Exactly WHY are you in such a tizzy that Mike unfollowed you or anyone else?
The saddest part is in regards to my opening statement.... society is in a sad state of affairs. I do not know Mike personally ON ANY LEVEL. Yeah I've watched his videos, bought his material, etc., etc. But I don't know the guy; and buying his stuff, following his tweets or watching his videos doesn't change that. For anyone.
So how in the world can anyone who doesn't KNOW him, judge him? This guy has contributed so much to the industry; provided HUGE value... and this is how the general public responds to something so absolutely mindless as "who Mike does or does not follow?" That's just sad.
I agree with several comments on the state of social media and it's looming demise. There are so many "twidiots" out there really abusing the medium, just like they do with everything else. Even here on BN. I have kept my mouth shut the short time I have been on here, but really, there are users on here that need to get a damn clue and do it know. Better yet..... Please Leave. Yeah sure we're all here to make money and grow our business and sell our stuff at some point.... if you say you're not you're either a liar or a n00b, in which case you will catch on quickly if you stick around long enough. We're all selling something.
But obviously there's a fair amount of people who just don't get it and abuse the "access" they're given. They take it for granted that there are real people here, adding all of that value.
Will it end? Probably not. Look at email spam... has it ended? No. So these morons are going to continue to muck up the game for the rest of us hard working entrepreneurs who recognize the value in keeping these networking and communication channels alive.
I just cleaned house on Facebook.
I realized that I got totally caught up in the social media "hype" and had all these random people as "friends." I didn't know these people. But following "social media etiquette" I accepted their requests to be added. Know what happened? Not so much as a single "Hi, how are you today? Tell me about yourself. I'm genuinely interested in who you are. Let's get to know each other." Nope, just message after message after message about so and so's new program launch, or "opportunity" meeting coming up, or how great they're company is, or the classic:
"Here's a bunch of random quotes I just Googled on personal development and self empowerment..... BUY MY STUFF>> Here's My Link... "Motivational Quote"... PS: BUY MY STUFF"
I love getting those messages from my "friends." Don't you?
So I deleted about 100 people from my profile. It's amazing now! Apparently I actually have real friends and family that use Facebook. Who knew!?
Anyway, I lost the steam for any more of a rant on this topic..... thnx for your ear.
Let the blatant one liner self promoting spammer replies commence!
Honestly, don't bother adding value to the conversation; who needs that crap anyway!
No really.... I WANT TO BUY YOUR STUFF.

Re: Give Me a Break: Stop the Twitter Vanity!
Gotta agree about twitter i recently joined and no i'm not following mike but i get a couple of dozen followers from god knows where and all they do is clog up my inbox.
They all want me to look at their blog etc. I am really not interested I thought it would be a good way to link up with my team and friends but am getting a bit bombarded.
Am new to social network/twitter thing any advice about using this tool constructively would be fantastic.

Jamie I think you nailed it actually.
IT IS a great tool for your team.
My whole team has an account setup just for us.
All the updates are locked so no one can intrude and we accept ZERO follows unless they are part of our team.
It's awesome!
And let's say you really want to have a twitter account to use for promoting yourself or your business, well guess what, don't follow anyone. Anyone who follows you and STAYS in your contacts ACTUALLY wants to hear what you are saying. Since you don't follow them back, you don't see their tweets.... so why else would they continue to follow you.
I've tested a lot of my theories on the subject. I've followed "guru" advice, I've tried this strategy and this strategy..... Yeah you may get bragging rights that you have a bagillion followers and mass TwtrPwr, but it doesn't take long to figure out that no one is listening. How could they?
It serves its purpose and can be EXTREMELY useful when used correctly. But personally, I have yet to see any truly convincing data that shows having thousands of faceless, random followers generated by a piece of software or anything else produced any real value or capital gain.
Cheers.

Re: Give Me a Break: Stop the Twitter Vanity!
So what if Mike 'unfollowed' you? I'm more surprised that he actually followed all those folks in the first place! Mike isn't a following kind of guy so who was he trying to kid?
And why the whole s*** storm about it? If you can cut through the noise, there's some good stuff to be had there, like a lot of the whole social networking arena. But the more folks you follow (or pretend to follow), the more noise you have to cut through.
The lesson to be learned is being true to who you are. And I personally think Mike's taught it rather well over the time I've been on his list. This is just one more example of him practising what he preaches. A few more folks would do well to take a leaf out of his book.

Re: Give Me a Break: Stop the Twitter Vanity!
Besides the fact that MY topic "The Twitter Backfire" is HOT too Raymond....I want to thank you for putting your 2 cents out there too.
Twitter is being abused - and yep...everyone here is right...it's turning into spam. And I absolutely love what Richard called them - "Twidiots"....(can I use that? or is it copyrighted? lol)
Who the heck cares if Mike unfollows people!!!!!!!!! I unfollow people! You unfollow people, the people who are so pissed off...UNFOLLOW PEOPLE! But oh no...let Mike Dillard, someone who they look up to, say he's unfollowing a few thousand people and get mad. LOL. For what? What are you mad at?
Mike has never followed me - and I honestly think he was the very first person I followed. I think Mike pointed me to Twitter!! Am I mad? NO. What for? If I want to tell him something I just type in "@Mike_Dillard" and he replies. Maybe that's a little hard to do for people if the person isn't already following you. Or maybe it's because Mike's such a "big" personality in the industry that they lost a piece of .....hell i don't even know what to say right there.
O and Ferny - You took my damn idea!! I was going to write something about how it's a bigger lesson in this whole Mike unfollowing issue that people are ignoring. He's cut his following list down to about 100+ people -obviously they mean something to him, and he likes reading their tweets. What is the big deal with these people? lol.
I did the same exact thing a few weeks ago - I unfollowed about 600+ people because I did the "follow you if you follow me" thing and I realized how stupid it was. Why am I going to follow all these people when they won't even respond to me? I @ them and they don't reply. STUUUPID! I even occasionally update my status telling them I unfollowed 600+ people and if they were one of them to unfollow me. So far almost 200 people have unfollowed me and it feels great!!! I'm getting more responsive people talking back and I'm able to see the people I WANT TO SEE on my feed.

Re: Give Me a Break: Stop the Twitter Vanity!
I am definitely not against mike or anybody, the point I was making is that it shouldn't be so extreme. Be open to follow new people, and be open to unfollow people you don't care about.
I don't even mind if Mike follows me or not, I stopped caring about the people who unfollowed me a while ago
And why don't people say the same about Facebook? I get added by random people everyday just because we have common friends, who also added each other randomly... it's really annoying.
anyway, I think debating is right, and as I said before nobody's right and nobody's wrong, it's just a different approach.

I have about 1700 followers now, which I consider "enough". Don't need 10,000. I recall my very first tweet. It was something like "It doesn't matter how many followers you have, if you have nothing to say." I think that still rings true.

Re: Give Me a Break: Stop the Twitter Vanity!
I agree. Next topic please....
Leave Mike alone. Who cares if he unfollowed some people? Did they get their feelings hurt? I wouldn't if he stopped following me.
Good grief. Mike Dillard is a very busy person and I can't imagine that he even has time to Twitter. I am not a third as busy as Mike and I have a hard time following my list of almost 1000 people. There are people like "IJustine" who has a ton of followers (278,980 at this writing) but she does not hardly follow anyone back (onlly 2,371). How could she possibly follow all of her followers? They are interested in what she has to say (for some reason) and that is just fine. She does not need to be in personal contact with each person. I am sure she probably doesn't even know half of them.
People, get over it! If your most important mission in life is to be on Mike Dillard's Twitter Following List, there is something seriously wrong.
If you have a large following do you even know who is on your list?
Give me a break.
