I agree that it is best to only follow those who will be adding rich keywords similar to the products I am promoting. Why follow someone totally irrelevant? They may have added me due to some random word as opposed to essential oils, jewelry, or other keywords I work with. I have more followers than I follow, and that makes sense to me. Great thoughts, and good post!

Well, my thoughts on this are who cares? I only follow people that I think has some relevant to what I am doing or it is someone that is very interesting to me. I do not follow everyone that follows me. I also don't follow anyone that does not have their location or a bio about themselves. I want to know about the person and if their location is “The Web” or “The World” I don’t follow them because I feel that they are full of crap. I don’t follow someone that has nothing to offer me either in my business or personal life. I don't unfollow someone because they don't follow me either. I really don't care that is not why I followed them in the first place. I think Mike did a good thing and it probably gave him a big surge in searches because all the people that were trying to figure out who he was. I believe that you need to read the bio of the person and then if they are in line with you ideals and beliefs and they offer something to your business or your personal life you follow them. I know that some people that follow me when I look at their tweets all they ever tweet is sales links. I don’t want to be bombarded with advertisements in every web 2.0 that I am in.

This discussion reminds me of when another Internet Marketing teacher and leader (not MLM) opened up a new Facebook account, so that he could be focussed on his "real" friends and relatives. It's not the same thing because Facebook is different in that you "have to" be a friend of someone who is your friend.

However, as many of you may remember, there was a big fuss about it, because people got upset that he didn't want to be their friend on Facebook. At least with Facebook, there are Fan pages where people can follow to their "heart's content".

As Eric said, there are other social media leaders who do it either way - that is, they automatically follow those who follow them. It's just another choice we have, like all the hundreds of other decisions we make:-)

Hi,

I am new to using twitter and the forum, but what I know is that you are not forced to follow or unfollow someone what is important is you making the right choice based on what you believe is best for you.

What works for A would not work for B, we need to be careful about how we take and make decisions both in our personal life and with our business.

I agree with Raymond and Fernando. It is absolutely more practical for someone like mike dillard to only follow people who he recommends you do business with.
and instead of bitchin about him not following you back you should be wondering why you werent followed back instead and start stepping your game up.
I am , and mike is going to follow me back, and so will all the other leaders on this forum because i am dedicated to providing the community with value either here, my twitter following, or those who read my blog.

I'll tell you what partner, you got right to the point, I really don't know much about Tweetin, but I'm sure glad you got'm off Mr Dillards back ( He's kinda like Matt Dillon in Gun Smoke)I just got into town and he already is wanting to see my picture. Do y'all have a post office so I can make sure my twin brother's picture isn't up there. People get us mixed up.

I told him soon as I fed old Poodin'Foot , Id get cleaned up and take me a picture for y'all.

By the way, aren't you one of them rocket scientists I heard about, man I'd like to have you on my ranch, you think you could help me sell my herd? Maybe you could help me slow them cows down ans speed them bulls up, you know like that SEO , only we would bo optimizing my herd instead of Goolgle and them other 2 or 3.

If keep allowing "junk" followers, it cheapens the community you dialogue in. People will avoid you if all they get from surrounding tweets are BizOp tweets.

Hi guys

I'm afraid that whether we think it's right or wrong, or whether it happened to us or not, Mike has all the right in the world to unfollow whoever he likes. I have unfollowed some of my followers, for similar reasons. But the fact that Mike is well-known and told people about it, means it's suddenly controversial.

I think we need to look at this objectively, and as someone made the point - Twitter is a marketing platform, and it wasn't working for Mike, so he decided to change how he used it. Simple. I'm sure that we all constantly evaluate which marketing methods and strategies are working and which not, and make changes.

And as someone else said - where you are on the ladder to marketing success (near the bottom or on the top), will influence how many followers you have, how many you follow, how and why you create followers, and how you use Twitter.

But I have to agree that it's extremely irritating and off-putting when people use Twitter for hard-sell or spam. So less of that, please! On this site, if you're a Twitter marketer, like me, let's commit to being genuine, to offering help to our followers, and to not spamming, especially when they first follow you or DM you.

Regards
Kathy

If there were more leaders like Mike who take a stand on this, it would be great. Having masses of followings and followers makes twitter very difficult unless you use tweetdeck or other. It can consume your life and be more of a distraction. As Ferny said earlier, thats not social netowrking

Keep it up Mike
