What got me started in my primary business?
Logic.
While I was sitting in a Denny's doing paperwork, a guy walked up and asked me if the car outside with the "Affordable Health Insurance" sign on it was mine.
When I said yes, he said, "Well, I know you're busy, but when you get a chance, would you mind taking a look at my website?", and he handed me his business card with the web address on it.
Later, I visited his website, and I was immediately struck by the potential of the opportunity.
As a Licensed Insurance agent, I am required to take a certain amount of state-mandated Continuing Education to keep my license up to date, and here was a Continuing Education company based on referral-marketing!
It was a perfect combination of opportunity, and a state-mandated product which professionals are required to purchase in order to stay in business. No selling required, they have to buy it, so why not get it from me!
I immediately could think of at least 200 people in my own company that needed Continuing Education for their licenses, and through networking groups, I knew many more people in industries like Real Estate and Mortgage that also were required to take Continuing Education.
After I got signed up as a Business Partner, I had a dozen customers before the end of the day, and the rest, as they say, is history.
As a side note, you'll notice the different types of marketing that are mentioned in this little snippet.
It started with a
car sign, then a
personal introduction, a
business card, a
website and old-fashioned
face-to-face networking (which is still my primary source of exposure).
Oh, and since I wrote this on here, I'll have to include
posting on forums also....
